"Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead" Review - Written by Anthony T

When I first saw Dead Snow in theaters back in 2011, I couldn’t wait to see a sequel to this film as I enjoyed it very much. Fast forward to 2014, Tommy Wirkola is back in the director’ chair and the Nazi zombies are back with “Dead Snow 2: Dead vs Red”.

The film starts right off from the ending of the first film, where Martin is trying to escapes the Nazi zombies. After an accident, he finds himself in a hospital handcuffed to the bed. To make matters worse, the doctors have attached Colonel Herzog’s’ hand to his body. He begins to find out that the hand has some superpowers and he’s not happy. This time, he’s aided by a group of zombie hunters to get revenge on Herzog and his army of Nazi zombies.

From time to time, I come across a film where I’m entertained and having a good time at the same time. This film easily fits to that category, as everything from the direction to the special effects were very good. “Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead” easily one of the most fun films that I’ve watching a horror film this year.

One of things that makes “Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead” fun was Tommy Wirkola’s direction. His direction was crazier and very good at the same time. Whether it was the action scenes to the way that some of the zombie action was filmed, it felt different to the point that it made the film more enjoyable to watch. Wirkola also does a very good making sure the acting matched up very well with the film’s screenplay. He would take his time to make sure that everyone was interested with the story and getting the performances that he needs. It helped make this film even better than “Dead Snow”.

The screenplay written by Wirkola, Stig Frode Heriksen and star Vegar Hoel was funnier and crazier than the first one. One of the things that makes this screenplay better was the fact that they set this film away from the snowy mountains. By doing that, it allows the film to be more bold and crazier. The other thing that the writers do very well is to get the humor right. There were a lot of funny scenes that I enjoyed here, but what makes the humor works so well is that it doesn’t take away from all of the zombie action. For horror comedies to work, there needs to be an equal balance between the two. The screenplay does that here, as there are funny gags plus a lots of over the top horror violence to make those two aspects work.

The Blu-ray extras start off with the audio commentary from director Tommy Wirkola and co-star/writer Stig Frode Heriksen. This was a good commentary track as it goes into making of the film and how it was created. It makes up for the lack of behind the scene featurette. Next, is the short film “A(r)men”. It fits well with this release with its premise. Overall, it’s worth checking out as I had a good time with this film. After that, the disc wraps up with the Norwegian version of the film, VFX featurette, “Dead Snow” comic book and trailers for this film and other Well Go USA releases.

This is one horror film that horror fans should check this out even those who love zombie comedies. “Dead Snow 2: Red vs Dead” is much crazier and fun film than some of the more recent zombie comedies out there at the moment.
