"Muck" Review - Written by Tim Hellman
'MUCK': One and a Half Stars (Out of Five)
B-horror/comedy flick from debut filmmaker Steve Wolsh. Wolsh wrote, directed and produced the movie; on a mere $250,000 budget (and it shows)! It's the first in a planned trilogy and tells the story of a group of friends trying to survive the night in an abandoned Cape Cod vacation house; after being almost killed by something sinister, in the swampy marshes nearby. It stars Lachlan Buchanan, Puja Mohindra, Bryce Draper, Jaclyn Swedberg (who was named Playboy Playmate of the year, in 2012) and horror legend Kane Hodder. Despite the filmmaker's admirable (and somewhat ambitious) intentions, the movie sucks.
The film begins with a group of friends emerging from the marshes of Cape Cod. They're bloody, wounded and frantic. They also apparently already lost a couple of their friends, to something evil in the marshes. They break into a vacation house; as one friend, Noah (Draper), runs to a local bar for help (it's also St. Patrick's Day). Noah calls his cousin, Troit (Buchanan), and asks him for a ride; not telling him of the danger he and his friends are in. Whatever was after them is still hunting them, and killing them off; one by one. Troit, and his friend Chandi (Mohindra), unwittingly venture into the chaos as well.
The movie thinks it's a lot more clever than it actually is. There are a lot of tongue-in-cheek, inside jokes; that aren't really funny, or witty, at all. The acting is also really bad, and the dialogue and story are horrible. There is some decent nudity and gore, but that's about it. Wolsh was apparently trying to make a fun B-horror flick; that's an homage to other classic and popular B- slasher movies, but it doesn't really work. I admire what he was trying to do but I'm just not very impressed by the end results, and I don't think most other horror fans will be either. I really wanted to like the movie, though!

Plot Synopsis:
After narrowly escaping an ancient burial ground, long forgotten and buried underneath the marshes of Cape Cod, a group of friends emerge from the thick, marshy darkness, tattered and bloody, lucky to be alive. They have already lost two of their friends in the marsh, presumably dead. They stumble upon an empty Cape Cod vacation house alongside the foggy marsh and break in to take shelter. Whatever was in the marsh is still after them and soon after one of them goes for help, the rest of the group learns that the evil in the marsh is not the only thing that wants them dead. Something worse, something more savage, was lying in wait just outside the marsh, in the house. What happens next is unspeakable horror that cannot be unseen. These unlucky travelers spend their St. Patrick's Day trapped between two evils forcing them to fight, die, or go back the way they came.

Press Release:
As many of you know, Anchor Bay will be releasing MUCK in theaters Friday the 13th, March 2015. Nevertheless, Steve Wolsh isn’t waiting around to start pre-production on the prequel to MUCK. Wolsh is committed to independent, old-school horror filmmaking with no CGI, and since no studio would allow him to make films the way he wants – bloody, dangerous and disturbing – he’s turned to Kickstarter to get the ball rolling, and horror fans are responding.
The Muck: Kickstarter boasts a ton of EPIC rewards, headlined by a walk-on role in the film, or the chance to even be KILLED (onscreen) by the Great KANE HODDER. There’s also plenty of autographed posters, personalized tweets, vines, and recorded messages from the Muck cast available, including the 2012, 2013, and 2014 Playboy Playmates of the Year Jaclyn Swedberg, Raquel Pomplun and Kennedy Summers. Not to mention tickets to a MUCK screening on Saint Patrick’s Day at the Playboy Mansion, a week in the MUCK house in Cape Cod, MUCK red carpet premiere tickets, and lots of MUCK SWAG, including t-shirts, MUCK U jerseys, and Muck shot glass. (Spoiler Alert: Muck shot glass have Big Glass Tits and can be seen on the Kickstarter page http://bit.ly/MuckKickstarter.)
Best of all: A pledge of just $25 gets backers their choice of DVD or Blu-ray copy of "MUCK", and you’ll receive it BEFORE it ever hits theaters (sorry, Anchor Bay!). Backers at this level will also receive an email copy of the "MUCK" script; a special "Thank You" mention on the "MUCK" Twitter and in the "MUCK" Prequel movie credits; and a digital download of the "MUCK" Prequel when it's released. We will also be taking two backers of this reward level or higher to the "MUCK" Premiere Party at the Playboy Mansion next March.
The prequel, titled MUCK: Feast of Saint Patrick will be be shot in "Bloody Stunning" 4K Ultra HD, just like the original MUCK, and again be full of incredible stunts, without the use of any CGI- that is, with your help!
Thank you to all the horror fans out there that have already support this project, please keep spreading the word: iif you help support the MUCK prequel, you’ll get great Rewards and see the films before anyone else!
To demonstrate his commitment to practical effects, Director Steve Wolsh lights his own hands on fire with a blow torch and drinks from a burning glass in the Kickstarter video, which can be seen here: http://bit.ly/MuckKickstarter. Please Give a Muck if you can.
