That's how bad the film was. Topics include the 4 year time jump rant, an unaired rant about David Gordon Green playing around with the ending in late august of this year which showed in the end product, the infamous "Cunningham" fake trailer because he wanted to jump on the Corey Cunningham meme train after hating the movie and more.

"Jurassic World: Fallen Kingdom" Review by Tim Hellman

'JURASSIC WORLD: FALLEN KINGDOM': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

The fifth installment in the 'JURASSIC PARK' franchise, and the second chapter in the new reboot trilogy.  In this sequel Owen Grady and Claire Dearing return to the abandoned Jurassic World theme park, in order to rescue the dinosaurs there from an imminent volcanic eruption.  'JURASSIC WORLD's writers, Colin Trevorrow (who also helmed the 2015 film) and Derek Connolly, returned to script this entry as well, and J.A. Bayona took over directing duties.  Steven Spielberg (the original film's director) returned as an executive producer once again.  The returning cast this time (from multiple other installments) includes Chris Pratt, Bryce Dallas Howard, B. D. Wong and Jeff Goldblum.  While Rafe Spall, Justice Smith, Daniella Pineda, Isabella Sermon, Ted Levine, James Cromwell and Toby Jones joined the cast.  It's received mixed reviews from critics, and it's another gigantic hit at the Box Office as well of course.  I loved it.

A volcanic eruption is set to destroy Isla Nublar, and the United States Senate is holding a debate on whether the dinosaurs there should be saved or not.  The Senate disapproves doing anything to save the animals, so Claire Dearing (Howard) creates the Dinosaur Protection Group, and she receives financial support from Benjamin Lockwood (Cromwell) in order to go to Nublar and rescue the dinosaurs.  Claire also enlists the help of her former lover, Owen Grady (Pratt).  Things get complicated when Lockwood's aide, Eli Mills (Spall), double-crosses the team in order to sell the dinosaurs for a huge profit.

The movie is spectacularly entertaining!  There's definitely some really cool creature attack scenes in it, and an awesome volcanic eruption escape scene as well, involving a drugged hero narrowly fleeing his death (in a totally classic scene in my opinion).  There's also a great animal liberation message throughout the film too, that I love (being a vegan and Animal Rights activist).  I really had a great time watching it, and I think the movie is an important animal rights film (for everyone to see) as well.

"Truth or Dare" Review by Tim Hellman

TRUTH OR DARE': Three Stars (Out of Five)

A supernatural horror flick about a normal game of truth or dare that turns deadly when something begins killing those who cheat at the game. It was directed by Jeff Wadlow (who also helmed the genre flicks 'KICK-ASS 2' and 'CRY WOLF'), and it was scripted by Wadlow, Michael Reisz, Jillian Jacobs, and Chris Roach. The movie stars Lucy Hale, Tyler Posey, Violett Beane, Hayden Szeto, and Landon Liboiron. It's received mostly negative review from critics, but it has performed really well at the Box Office so far though. I found it to be very mildly amusing.

Olivia (Hale) gets talked into going to Mexico, for vacation for a week, by her best friend Markie (Beane). Olivia secretly has a huge crush on Markie's boyfriend, Lucas (Posey), who Olivia is constantly cheating on. As their trip is coming to an end, the friend group is all talked into playing a game of 'truth or dare', while drinking one night. Later they learn that the game is actually being controlled by supernatural forces, which will kill them if they tell a lie or don't successfully complete a dare. All of their social drama also comes to light, as they're being killed, one by one, by a mysterious entity as well.

The movie is your pretty standard slasher flick. To it's credit, it's definitely pretty creepy and disturbing, but at the same time it's also pretty pointless, like a lot of similar horror films though. The film does accomplish what it sets out to do basically though, and it's not a bad movie in my opinion. I'd recommend seeing it, if you're a big fan of the genre, but probably not it you're not.

"Blockers" Review by Tim Hellman

'BLOCKERS': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

The new comedy about three parents trying to block their daughters from losing their virginity on prom night. It stars Leslie Mann, Ike Barinholtz, John Cena, Kathryn Newton, Geraldine Viswanathan and Gideon Adlon. The film was directed by debut feature filmmaker Kay Cannon, and it was scripted by Brian and Jim Kehoe. It's received mostly positive reviews from critics, and it's expected to do well at the Box Office as well. It's a really well made teen sex-comedy, with a refreshing gender twist and insightful parental relationship commentary.

Julie (Newton), Kayla (Viswanathan) and Sam (Adlon) have been friends since they were really young. Now their prom is coming up, and they've each decided they want to lose their virginity that night. The trio's parents (Mann, Barinholtz and Cena) discover the sex pact the girls have made, on Julie's open laptop. They decide they need to stop them, or cockblock them, and of course everyone learns a little bit about themselves, and bonds in the process.

The film is pretty consistently funny, not hilarious or laugh-out-loud usually, but the humor almost always works. It's really well written, directed and acted. Mann is fantastic in the lead, and Barinholtz is always hilarious in my opinion. Cena isn't a good actor, he's actually pretty bad, but he's good in the right roles (like this). He actually reminds me a lot of Dwayne Johnson in talent and skill range (in my opinion). The best part about the film though, is the drama (for me at least); I cried a little multiple times in it. The parents love for their kids, and other emotionalissues, are pretty touching. I also really like that it's a teen sex comedy from the girls points of view (which is rarely ever done). It's just an all around well made comedy flick, and a pretty good time at the movies.

"Pacific Rim: Uprising" Review by Tim Hellman

'PACIFIC RIM: UPRISING': Four Stars (Out of Five)

A sequel to the hit 2013 sci-fi monster flick 'PACIFIC RIM', which was directed and co-written by 2018's Oscar winning filmmaker Guillermo del Toro (who also served as a producer on this sequel). The film was co-written and directed by debut feature filmmaker Steven S. DeKnight (who's previously only helmed genre TV shows, like 'DAREDEVIL', 'DOLLHOUSE', 'SMALLVILLE' and 'ANGEL'). The story is set 10-years after the events of the original movie, when society is threatened by new Kaiju creatures, and a new younger team of Jaeger pilots must do battle with them. It stars John Boyega, Cailee Spaeny, Scott Eastwood, Jing Tian, Adria Arjona and Zhang Jin (in new parts); while Charlie Day, Rinko Kikuchi and Burn Gorman all reprise their roles from the original movie. It's received mostly positive reviews from critics, and it's a modest hit at the Box Office as well. If this chapter does good enough, many more sequels are planned (including spinoffs) to create a whole new sci-fi movie universe (similar to the 'STAR WARS' franchise). I enjoyed this film to an extent, but not as much as the original, I am still looking forward to more sequels though.

The story takes place ten-years after the Battle of the Breach. A Jaeger has gone rogue and is causing massive destruction. It appears as though someone, or something, has released more Kaiju monsters into the world. Jake Pentecost (Boyega), son of the late great Stacker Pentecost (Idris Elba in the first film), leads a new team of young Jaeger pilots to stop this new threat.

The movie definitely has some cool visuals, and some pretty awesome robot vs. monster fight scenes. Boyega is also very charismatic in the lead, although Eastwood kind of sucks as his rival, still the film is severely lacking what del Toro brought to the original. This movie has a very strong TV feel to it too, thanks to the inexperienced new director. If you're a fan of the 'DAREDEVIL' and 'DOLLHOUSE' type shows you might enjoy it, but I'm a movie lover (not a TV fan). I prefer quality over quantity, and this film definitely doesn't live up to it's predecessor. I am still looking forward to more future installments though, like I said, and hopefully they'll be much better than this.

"Fifty Shades Freed" Review by Tim Hellman

'FIFTY SHADES FREED': Zero Stars (Out of Five)

The third installment in the blockbuster erotic romantic thriller series, based on the three hit books (beginning with 'Fifty Shade of Grey') by E.L. James. In this chapter Ana and Christian are finally getting used to a more stable relationship together, although it's still really kinky and abusive, when a stalker from Ana's past continues to ruin their happiness. The film was directed by James Foley and written by Niall Leonard (the same duo also performed both duties on the last sequel), and Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan once again reprise their starring roles (for the third time). The movie also costars Eric Johnson, Max Martini, Brant Daugherty, Eloise Mumford, Rita Ora and Luke Grimes. It's received almost unanimously negative reviews from critics once again (like the others), but it is expected to be another hit at the Box Office though (like the others). I once again hated it.

Ana (Dakota Johnson) and Christian (Jamie Dornan) are married, and finally starting to live a happy life together. Christian can't relax though, as he's constantly worried about Ana's safety. Especially when the couple realizes that Ana's ex-boss, Jack Hyde (Eric Johnson), who also sexually assaulted her, is out of prison and stalking her. Christian does everything he can to try to keep Ana safe, including commanding her on where and when she has to be somewhere, but Ana wants her freedom, and doesn't listen. The couple's new happiness is of course soon jeopardized because of this.

I've hated this series from the beginning, because it makes a hero out of a #MeToo culprit (Christian Grey), and romanticizes stalking and sexual harassment. These are both things that the Christian character is guilty of doing to Ana, in the first two installments of the franchise. In this one his abuse towards her is at least seemingly consensual, but it still seems like the wrong message to send viewers (and readers of the novels). So I've always had a problem with the morality of supporting these films and books, and I don't understand why any intelligent moral person would. I've only continued to see each movie so that I can review them; in order to speak my feelings on this subject, and it's also just a lot more fun to review a bad film than a good one. This one is a really bad movie as well, and it's even worse than the first two installments. It seems like just a series of random pointless scenes strung together, by the weakest example of a plot that I've seen in a film in quite some time, just so they can give the viewer lots of erotic excessive sex scenes (as well as lots of pointless nudity). The movie really just feels like a well produced porno, but of course it's a heavy R-rated version of one (rather than X-rated).

"The Beguiled" Blu-Ray Review by Anthony T

When I first heard of “The Beguiled”, I was interested in seeing this because of the talent involved in the project. When you have Nicole Kidman, Kristen Dunst, Colin Farrell and Sofia Copploa directing, I had to check this film out.

The film takes place during the civil war where a solider lies nearing death in front of a girl’s boarding school. The headmistress of the school takes him in so that he can recover from his wounds. Soon, the girls at the school start to take a liking to him. This leads to tension and danger that may turn grim for everyone at the boarding school.

I was hoping that this would be a good film considering that I like Sofia Copploa’s previous work including films like “The Virgin Suicides” and “Lost in Translation”. After watching “The Beguiled” I was surprised that I ended up feeling disappoint with the screenplay considering that I thought the directing and acting was good.

Sofia Copploa’s directing here was very good. She does a very good job with making sure the film moves at a good pace through her direction. Whether it was the way the film was shot to making sure the performances are good, everything somewhat makes up for the film’s screenplay. The other thing that she does very well is to make sure she gets the performance that she needs. It made the film worth sitting through as she makes sure that the performances are strong enough that you’re kept interested in this film.

Speaking of the performances, I though Kristen Dunst, Nicole Kidman and Colin Farrell were very good in their roles. I liked how each of them are able to make sure their performances fit the era in which this film takes place. They made sure that they had chemistry with each other to keep the scenes moving and make the characters interesting enough to keep my interest even though I wasn’t happy with the film’s screenplay.

Speaking of the screenplay, I thought this was one of Sofia Copploa’s weakest screenplays. One of things that doesn’t make this work was lack of tension in most of the scenes. The felt like it was going on one note for most of it as it felt it wasn’t connecting with me. If it wasn’t for the performances, the film would be much worse. It was until the third act where the tension picked up and made it interesting. I wished there was more of that in the beginning as it would’ve make it more an interesting film. I really wanted to like “The Beguiled” as the performances were very good here and the direction was solid. But, a weak screenplay hurts whatever good this film has. If you’re into the performance and directing aspects, this is worth watching. But if you’re into story and dramatic action, this film lacks that for two thirds of it. The film’s disappointing screenplay ruin any chance of “The Beguiled” from being one of the year’s best.

The special features on the disc is light as there are only two short featurette on the disc. Both “A Shift in Perspective” and “A Southern Style” both were good. They both go into the filming of the film and the locations that were used to create the time period that the film takes place. My only complaint was that I wished they were longer and went more in depth.

Review Rating: Three Stars

"Happy Death Day" Review by Tim Hellman

'HAPPY DEATH DAY': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

A horror film about a college student that's murdered on her birthday, and then keeps waking up the previous morning, having to repeat the same day until she can find out who her killer is and stop them. It was directed by Christopher B. Landon (who also helmed the 2015 zombie horror flick 'SCOUTS GUIDE TO THE ZOMBIE APOCALYPSE'), and it was written by Scott Lobdell. The film stars Jessica Rothe, Israel Broussard, Rachel Matthews and Ruby Modine. It's received mostly positive reviews from critics, and it's a huge hit at the Box Office as well. I absolutely loved it!

Tree Gelbman (Rothe) is a very popular student at her school, who's having an affair with a married teacher and likes to party and drink a lot. She wakes up in the dorm room of a much less popular student than her, named Carter Davis (Broussard). Tree then rushes out of his room, embarrassed by what she's done, and goes about her day, which happens to be her birthday. Later that night she's murdered by a masked killer, and the next day she wakes up the previous morning, having to repeat the same day again. Tree discovers that she'll have to keep doing this, until she can learn the identity of her killer and stop them.

There's been so many movies now that take a different spin on the 'GROUNDHOG DAY' storyline (like the equally excellent 'BEFORE I FALL', from earlier this year), that it seems like it should be it's own film genre by now!. This movie manages to do it in a pretty fresh and somewhat creative way though, and it's a hell of a lot of fun. Especially if you love horror flicks (like I do). Rothe is great in the lead, and Lobdell seems to be an awesomely talented director at this film genre. I can't wait to see what he does next, and I definitely recommend this movie as a Halloween treat!

"American Made" Review by Tim Hellman

'AMERICAN MADE': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

A biopic based on the life of a former TWA pilot, named Barry Seal, who became a contract pilot working for the CIA, as well as a drug smuggler for the Medellin Cartel (in the 1980s), and later served as a DEA informant. The movie stars Tom Cruise as Barry Seal, and it costars Domhnall Gleeson and Sarah Wright. It was directed by Doug Liman (who also directed Cruise in 2014's 'EDGE OF TOMORROW'), and it was written by Gary Spinelli. The film is a modest hit at the Box Office so far, and it's also garnered mostly positive reviews from critics. I found it to be a highly entertaining, and pretty educational crime biopic.

In the late 1970s, Barry Seal (Cruise) was a bored pilot working for TWA, and also smuggling illegal cigars into America. He's approached by a CIA operative, going by the name Monty Schaefer (Gleeson), and offered a job flying clandestine reconnaissance missions over South America. Seal is later asked to be a courier between the CIA and General Noriega, and during this time he's also asked to fly cocaine into the US (on return flights), by the Medellin Cartel. The CIA pretends not to be aware of this, and continues to employ Barry; while moving him and his family to Mena for safety. Seal continues working for the cartel, and the CIA (making tons of money), while also trying to keep his wife (Wright) and daughter happy.

The movie is surprisingly entertaining, from the opening scene till the very last (and that's a pretty high compliment in my opinion). It's just a hell of a lot of fun! Cruise is amazing (like usual) in the lead, and he pretty much makes the whole movie work (on his own almost). Liman is a decent enough director too, but this movie is all about Tom Cruise (and he totally sells it). It's also amazing how he can make a character that should be pretty unlikable, in any other film, totally lovable (despite all of the immoral things he does). The movie is just a blast to watch, and that's saying a lot for a biopic (in my opinion). I usually think they're boring.

"The Mummy" Review by Tim Hellman

'THE MUMMY': Three Stars (Out of Five)

A reboot to the classic 'THE MUMMY' franchise, and the first installment in Universal Pictures' new Dark Universe series (with plans to reboot multiple other classic 'monster movie' franchises as well). This film has Tom Cruise battling an evil ancient princess, that he awakens from her mummified state (buried beneath the desert in a crypt). The movie also stars Sofia Boutella, Annabelle Wallis, Jake Johnson and Russell Crowe. It was directed and co-produced by Alex Kurtzman (who also co-wrote 'MISSION IMPOSSIBLE III', also starring Cruise) and it was written by David Koepp, Dylan Kussman and Christopher McQuarrie (who's also worked with Cruise multiple times before). The film has received mostly negative reviews from critics, and it's also underperformed at the domestic Box Office. I'm pretty disappointed with it as well.

Two American soldiers (Cruise and Johnson), serving time in Iraq, unwittingly unearth an ancient princess (Boutella), buried beneath the Iraqi desert in a crypt (by calling in an airstrike). They're then assigned to assist an archaeologist (Wallis), that one of them previously had an affair with, investigate the newly discovered crypt. While investigating it, they also awaken the mummified princess (of course). The soldiers are also then cursed by the evil mummy, and then forced into an otherworldly adventure like nothing they've ever been through before.

The film has some decent effects in it, and a few cool mummy fight scenes. Cruise is also (like usual) a great action hero in it as well. Other than that though, the movie is mostly forgettable. I love monster flicks too, so I really wanted to like it. There are definitely a few thrills here and there, but they're mostly forgettable. I hope the next Dark Universe film is a lot better than this one, that's for sure.

"The Fate of the Furious" Review by Tim Hellman

'THE FATE OF THE FURIOUS': Four Stars (Out of Five)

The eighth installment in the immensely popular blockbuster franchise, and only the second chapter not to include the late Paul Walker (following 2006's 'TOKYO DRIFT'). Vin Diesel, Dwayne Johnson, Jason Statham, Michelle Rodriguez, Tyrese Gibson, Chris Bridges, Nathalie Emmanuel and Kurt Russell all reprise their roles from the other films; while Charlize Theron, Scott Eastwood and Helen Mirren join the cast. F. Gary Gray (who's best know for helming 2015's 'STRAIGHT OUTTA COMPTON') directed this installment (he's also worked with Diesel before on 2003's 'MAN APART', and with Theron on 2003's 'THE ITALIAN JOB'). It was once again written by Chris Morgan, who also wrote the last 6 chapters in the series. The film is also (once again) a huge hit at the Box Office, and it's also gotten mostly positive reviews from critics as well (like all of the other recent installments in the series). I enjoyed it too.

Dom Torretto (Diesel) and Letty Ortiz (Rodriguez) are on their honeymoon in Havana, when Dom is approached by a cyberterrorist known as Cipher (Theron). She seduces him into working for her, by showing him a picture of something that's obviously very important to him. Dom then betrays his team, and steals an EMP device from them. Agent Frank Petty (Russell) then recruits Letty, Luke Hobbs (Johnson), Deckard Shaw (Statham) and the rest of Dom's team to help them catch Dom, and stop Cipher.

The movie is action-packed, but it's also way too long (at over 2 hours and 15 minutes). For me, it definitely starts to drag a little in the middle of the film. I wasn't a big fan of the series when it first started, but I've been really impressed with the last several installments, and I think this is one of the best ones yet. It's not as good as the last chapter in the series, because that was a really fitting (and quite beautiful) tribute to Paul Walker, but it might be the second best one yet. And I really respect how diverse a cast this franchise has always employed; it's probably the most diversely cast blockbuster franchise in cinema history (but 'STAR WARS' is catching up to it though).

"Get Out" Review by Tim Hellman

GET OUT': Five Stars (Out of Five)

The new horror flick from writer/director/co-producer Jordan Peele (in his directorial debut). The film is also Peele's first venture into the horror genre, as he's previously only worked in comedy (most notably on the TV shows 'KEY AND PEELE' and 'MADTV'). The story revolves around an interracial couple, that visits the estate of the wealthy white woman's parents, where things don't seem quite right there (especially for people of color). The movie has been a huge hit at the Box Office, and it's also received almost unanimous rave reviews from critics and fans alike. I think it's a modern horror masterpiece.

Chris Washington (Daniel Kaluuya) is an aspiring photographer that's about to visit the parents of his girlfriend, Rose Armitage (Allison Williams), for the first time. He's concerned because Rose, who's white, hasn't told her parents (Bradley Whitford and Catherine Keener) that Chris is black yet. Things are definitely awkward, upon meeting the girl's parents, and they only get stranger as Chris meets other people at the estate. Things especially don't seem right with the family's servants; who are both black, and they also both appear to be under some kind of possessive hypnosis.

The movie is extremely creepy, and masterfully directed (almost in a classic Hitchcockian way). It's also very witty, and full of biting social commentary. It's exaggerated, but it really does make you feel what it might be like to be a person of color, in a world ran by privileged (and usually quite bigoted) white people. The performances are all good (especially Kaluuya in the lead) and I think Peele has definitely proven himself to be a very talented, and quite diverse, filmmaker. I can't wait to see what he does next, and this is definitely one of the best horror movies in recent years!
