"The Villainess" Review by Anthony T

“The Villainess” is a film that I’ve been wanting to see ever since I first heard about. What drew me to wanting to watch this film was the fact that the film’s title has a kick ass title plus this is an action film and I haven’t reviewed one of those in a while.

The film is about a woman who recruited by a government agency after exacted revenge from a drug cartel. She is forced to become a sleeper agent for the government to have a normal life. Soon, her past starts to catch up with her as secrets destroyed everything for her. Now, she is forced to exact to take her revenge to a whole new level.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen an action film that had both great action and had some very good dramatic moments. “The Villainess” is a film that is action packed and emotion filled from start to finish.

Director/co-writer Byung-gil Jung does a very good job making this film feel different from other action films. From the way that he directs the intense action scenes to make sure the scenes have a certain feel to them, everything works as I was into the story and the main character. The other thing that Jung does very well is to make sure he get what he needs in the making the performance aspects work. The cast had great onscreen chemistry with each other which made the dialogue scenes entertaining. It added to all the insane action that this film has.

The film also had a great performance from the film’s lead Ok-bin Kim. She does a great job with the way that she approaches the film’s main character. Whether it’s the way she approaches the action scenes to how much emotion she brought to the dramatic scenes, it made interested in the character throughout.

The film written Byung-gil Jung and Byeong-gil Jung is one of the best of the year. What makes this screenplay work so well was the fact that they did a great job balancing both the action and dramatic aspects. It allowed the film to tell its story while providing some great action as it didn’t feel like an action only film where it was action all the time. The other thing that I liked about this was the fact that it does a great job developing the main character. I liked how the writers do this during the course of the film. It makes the main character interesting and makes some the dramatic scenes work well. This is what helps makes an action film like this very entertaining.

This will film will go down as one of the best film that I’ve seen all year. It has great action and great drama which makes this one of the best foreign action films that I’ve seen since “The Raid”. With its great action and a strong lead performance, “The Villainess” is an excellent action film from start to finish.

'BUSTER'S MAL HEART': Four Stars (Out of Five)

An indie mystery about a mentally unstable mountain man, and former family man, who now survives by breaking into empty vacation homes, while he constantly warns others (on talk radio) about an upcoming 'Inversion' at the change of the millennium. It was written and directed by Sarah Adina Smith, and it stars Rami Malek (in his first starring film role), Toby Huss, Kate Lyn Sheil and DJ Qualls. The movie had it's world premiere at the Toronto International Film Festival, and it's received mostly positive reviews from critics. I found it to be bizarrely interesting, and for the most part pretty well made, but it also left things just a little too unexplained for my tastes.

The film opens with a mountain man, Buster (Malek), desperately trying to escape the authorities that are chasing him. He makes it to the top of a mountain, where the film then flashes back to his past as a family man, with a wife (Sheil) and daughter (Sukha Belle Potter). He also recollects on his time breaking into empty vacation homes, and calling into radio shows ranting about an upcoming 'Inversion' (at the turn of the millennium). Buster also has multiple visions of being lost at sea. As a viewer we have to interpret what's real, what isn't, and when and where it's all taking place.

The film is definitely bizarre and interesting, and I was always curious of where it was leading to. I think the acting is good in the film (especially Malek in the lead) and Smith is obviously a very talented filmmaker. I was just hoping for a little more from the conclusion. I don't need everything explained to me in a film, but I don't like everything to be left a question mark either. I'm sure some viewers will think they understand it, but I think most of the film is entirely left up to individual interpretation. If you like that type of movie you'll probably love it, I'm not a huge fan of the genre though.

"Bitcoin Heist" Review by Anthony T

It’s been a while since I’ve had a chance to review a film that wasn’t a horror film. But when I first heard of “Bitcoin Heist”, the poster had the feel of a heist film in the vain of “Snatch” and one of the “Ocean Eleven” film. This is what sold me on this film as sometime poster art can make interested in a film.

The film follows an Interpol agent who is looking for the cyber-criminal known as the ghost. He’s been laundering money and turning them into bitcoins. To stop them, she enlisted a team of criminals to stop his ultimate heist. But there’s an old saying, there’s no honor among thieves.

It’s been a while since I’ve seen a foreign film that I had a fun time with. There have been some that were great but didn’t have that fun feel to it due to the tone of the film that I was seeing. “Bitcoin Heist” was a fun and thrilling ride from start to finish.

Writer/director Ham Tran does a very good job with the film’s action and pace. He makes sure the film has an Edgar Wright / Guy Ritchie look with the way that he directs the action and how he approaches some of the film’s scenes. It made this entertaining as it made me interested with the material. The other thing that I liked was the way that Tran does a very good job making the performances are very good. I liked how spend the time making sure each of his actors and actresses have chemistry with each other. It made the performances work well on screen. This helped make this film and its story fun which a film like this is supposed to do.

The other thing that was very good was its screenplay as it had a quirky and thrilling tone to it. Tran does a very good job making sure the action had a fun feel to it. Whether it was the way it was constructed in the screenwriting process to making sure it made sense with the story, Tran makes sure that it’s incorporated well with the film’s story. It made this different from other foreign action film. The other thing that the screenplay does very well is to develop the characters during the course of the film. You have a lot of films with lots of action, but you need characters to make the story have a purpose. This film does this very well as I was interested in each of the characters throughout the whole film.

It’s been a while since I’ve caught a foreign action film that had the feel of the fun thrill ride. “Bitcoin Heist was that and more as it was a fun two hours. If you like films like “Ocean’s Eleven” and “Now You See Me” that you will have a fun time with this film.
