Horrorpalooza 2014: "The ABC's of Death 2" Review - Written by Anthony T
“The ABC’s of Death 2” is a film that I’ve been waiting to get a chance to see since first hearing about it. I enjoyed the first film, even though I couldn’t stand some of its segments. But I was excited about this entry considering the talent that are involved with the project.
The film consists of 26 chapters that represent each letter of the alphabet. It features some of the best up and coming talents including Julian Barratt (A Field in England), Todd Rohal (The Catechism Cataclysm), Steven Kostanski (Manborg), Alejandro Brugués (Juan of the Dead), Jim Hosking (commercial director), Hajime Ohata (Henge), Chris Nash (Skinfections), Rodney Ascher (Room 237), Bill Plympton (Animator), Erik Matti (On the Job), Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper (Vanishing Waves), Vincenzo Natali (Cube), Larry Fessenden (The Last Winter), Julien Maury and Alexandre Bustillo (Inside), E.L. Katz (Cheap Thrills), Jen and Sylvia Soska (American Mary), Aharon Keshales and Navot Papushado (Big Bad Wolves), Julian Gilbey (A Lonely Place To Die), Dennison Ramalho (Ninjas), Lancelot Imasuen (Nollywood director), Jerome Sable (Stagefright), Robert Morgan (Bobby Yeah), Robert Boocheck (Horrific), Juan Martinez Moreno (Game of Werewolves), Marvin Kren (Rammbock:Berlin Undead)and Soichi Umezawa (special makeup effects artist).
Before I start on what I liked and disliked about “The ABC’s of Death 2”, I think this is much better film than “The ABC’s of Death”. It didn’t feel like there too many awful ones here. There were a couple of bad one which I’ll get to but at least most of the films were good or so-so. This made it a little harder coming up with some of the best shorts here. Still, that it’s a good problem to have especially when there wasn’t many bad/awful ones. Let me start off with the ones I liked.
Speaking of starting off, this film starts off with one of best ones in the whole film. “A for Amateur” directed by E. L. Katz. Like his earlier film this year “Cheap Tricks”, this was one twisted film. I liked, the way that he does a great job starting the short like a music video with the way it was directed and conceived. It made me think that the whole short was going to be that way. But I was wrong, as this quickly turns into one of the most gruesome and shocking shorts of the bunch.
The next one that I truly liked and stood out for me was “K for Knell” directed by Kristina Buozyte and Bruno Samper, the duo behind the Lithuania film “Vanishing Waves”. This was an intense short from start to finish. What I liked about it was the fact they manage to make everything intense without any dialogue being spoken. The way they directed their actress helped this short work as a whole without needing other characters to make the action scary, as her reactions helped build the suspense. It also provided a good scare or two which helped set it apart from some of the other shorts. The other one that stood out was “W for Wish” by Steven Kostanski. This short had the same feel as Kostanski’s last film “Manborg”. He makes sure that his short had a different approach from its fanboy feel to the way that he uses stop motion effects. It made the short have its apocalyptic tone while also having its cheesy feel to it. It made the short both entertaining and twisted.
Other good ones include the Claymation short “D for Deloused”, the weird “G is for Granddad”, Erik Matti’s (On the Job) dysfunctional family short “I is for Invincible”, Marvin Kren’s (Rammbock: Berlin Undead) “R is for Roulette”, the entertaining Q is for Questionnaire directed by Rodney Ascher (Room 237)” Jen and Sylvia Soska’s (See No Evil 2) creepy “T is Torture Porn” featuring Tristen Risk (American Mary) and Conor Sweeney (Father’s Day, Manborg) and the shocking “X is for Xylophone” directed by Alexandre Bustillo and Julien Maury(Vivid, Inside) and starring Beatrice Dalle (Inside).
There were a couple of really bad ones too. For the life of me, why in the world the two of the worst shorts of are L and M again. They weren’t as horrifically bad as the L and M in the first film but I would’ve thought those letters would be the easiest shorts to watch. “L for Legacy” was one of those shorts that should’ve aired on Syfy and not this film. Everything was wrong from the story feeling rushed to the effects, it had a cheesy and dull feel to it. “M for Masticate” is the other one that really sucked. It was directed by Robert Boocheck, who won the 26th director contest for this entry. What made this short not work for me was the way that he uses slow motion. That technique made the short nauseating to watch, as I was disgusted with what I was watching. It also didn’t help that the ending was the beginning of the short.
Beside those two, the other awful short that stood out in a negative way was “E for Equilibrium directed by Alejandro Brugues (Juan of the Dead). This is the worst of the bunch. This short had characters that come off as stupid and uninteresting. Also, it would’ve been nice to have seen interaction with the characters. While some of shorts didn’t have dialogue or much interaction, they managed to build tension and suspense in their shorts. This film has none of that, as it’s not suspenseful and entertaining enough to grab my interest.
Even though I liked “The ABC’s of Death”, this film is much better than the last one. With some very entertaining shorts and more of an intense feel. “The ABC’s of Death 2” shocking horror at its best. I can’t wait to see a third installment of this series.
“The ABC’s of Death 2” is currently available through VOD providers and ITunes and hits theaters in limited release on October 31st.

Beyond Fest Announces Complete Film Lineup and Events
Beyond Fest and the American Cinematheque recently announced the complete list and events that are scheduled to take place at Beyond Fest, which runs from September 25th - October 4th, 2014 at the Egyptian Theatre in Los Angeles. The complete list of films and events can be found in the press release at the bottom of this post
For more information on Beyond Fest, you can visit the official website at: http://www.beyondfest.com.
Press Release:
Beyond Fest and the American Cinematheque announced today that they are partnering for the return of the sophomore festival, Beyond Fest, featuring the best in world genre programming, September 25th - October 4th, 2014 at the Egyptian Theatre, 6712 Hollywood Boulevard. Tickets will be available through Fandango today.
Dedicated to delivering the elite in horror, sci-fi, fantasy, and badass cinema, this year's Beyond Fest programming reflects a globally diverse and eclectic mix of premieres, rare repertory screenings, and special events, all of which are anchored in bringing firsts to the community of genre fans in Los Angeles. Beyond Fest has also partnered with Robert Rodriguez's El Rey Network as its presenting sponsor, a partnership that will make much of the festival's programming free to creative makers and film fans alike.
"The response was so great last year that we knew we had to bring Beyond Fest back, so much so that we immediately started planning this installment," said Christian Parkes, co-founder of Beyond Fest. "We challenged ourselves to build on the foundation we laid and to create something that is a celebration for the audience as much as the films on the screen. Our partnership with El Rey Network is indicative of this as it allows us to share a brave, new generation of filmmakers with the film community of Los Angeles."
L.A. premieres are integral to Beyond Fest as the festival opens with HORNS, Alexandre Aja's (HAUTE TENSION, HILLS HAVE EYES) wonderfully dark take on Joe Hill's explosive book, complete with a revelatory turn by Daniel Radcliffe.
Blumhouse Productions and Shock Till You Drop have joined forces to deliver a free screening of the terrifying meta-remake of THE TOWN THAT DREADED SUNDOWN directed by Alfonso Gomez-Rejon (AMERICAN HORROR STORY) and produced by Jason Blum and Ryan Murphy, while anthology fans are rewarded with first looks at the shock-rides ABC'S OF DEATH 2 and V/H/S VIRAL, complete with cast and crew and favorite V/H/S shorts.
Jeff Goldsmith brings his wildly popular Q&A / Backstory empire to Beyond Fest for two evenings of deep discussion, first with Dan Gilroy in support of his masterful directorial debut, NIGHTCRAWLER, and then it's a night of mischief, mayhem and soap as he talks to FIGHT CLUB author, Chuck Palahniuk, and screenwriter, Jim Uhls exploring the transition of an apocalyptic masterpiece to pitch-perfect screenplay. Preceding the discussion is a screening of David Fincher's brilliantly caustic adaptation.
Japanese cinema plays a prominent role with three of its finest exports taking center stage. Following last year's fan-favorite, WHY DON'T YOU PLAY IN HELL?, auteur Sion Sono returns with his deliriously over the top adaptation of Santa Inoue's seminal manga series TOKYO TRIBE. Hot on the heels of its highly controversial domestic release, Tetsuya Nakashima's thoroughly groundbreaking THE WORLD OF KANAKO plays a special free screening, while Hitoshi Matsumoto's quasi-sex-comedy, R100, closes out the axis of anarchy with lead dominatrix, Lindsay Kay Hayward, on site to whip the audience into shape.
This year's L.A. Spotlight shines on directors Dennis Widmyer & Kevin Kolsch who brings their black tale of fame-at-all-costs to the Egyptian's apt Hollywood locale for STARRY EYES. Joined by the film's cast and crew, Dennis & Kevin will follow his local bow with the film they cite as a heavy influence: Andrzaj Zulawski's masterpiece of nuanced terror, POSSESSION.
Integral to Beyond Fest's slate is the partnership with El Rey Network. As Presenting Sponsor, El Rey Network is making the 80-seat Spielberg Theatre accessible to all under the banner of "El Rey's 'The People's Network' Theatre" and screening eight films from the most original directors in the world of genre film including: HYENA (UK - LA premiere), THE EDITOR (Canada - LA premiere), NORWAY (Greece - LA premiere), FUTURE SHOCK! THE STORY OF 2000AD (UK - LA premiere) and THE CANAL (Ireland - LA premiere)
"These screenings are free of charge because we believe in the filmmakers behind them: these are brilliant films from all across the world and we want to expose audiences to them," said Grant Moninger, American Cinematheque programmer. "It's important to share bold, unique talent on the big screen, it's where a filmmakers craft shines the most."
Repertory titles play a prominent part of Beyond Fest and this year is no exception with a handful of massive events:
Produced in partnership with the French Consulate, Meltdown Comics and RADiUS, SNOWPIERCER creator, Jean-Marc Rochette, and DC Comics Publisher, Jim Lee, will discuss the process of translating creative vision from the comic book to the big screen before Bong Joon-ho's stunning epic rolls overhead. Complimenting SNOWPIERCER will be the world premiere of Jesus Castro-Ortega's behind the scenes documentary.
ONLY GOD FORGIVES provides the inspiration for the LA premiere of MY LIFE DIRECTED BY NICOLAS WINDING REFN, an illuminating and intimate portrait of Danish auteur Nicolas Winding Refn, directed and shot by his wife, Liv Corfixen. Documenting Refn's journey to bring ONLY GOD FORGIVES to the big screen, Corfixen is honest and unflinching with her lens capturing Refn is a way previously unseen outside of his inner crew and, in many cases, outside of Corfixen herself. Liv Corfixen and Nicolas Winding Refn will sit in conversation between the two films.
Geoff Boucher's Humans From Earth Nerdist podcast pairs together John Carpenter and Jamie Lee Curtis for the first time ever to discuss the making of the all-time classic, HALLOWEEN. Complete with the brand-new 4K re-master supervised by HALLOWEEN cinematographer, Dean Cundy, and a screening of El Rey's THE DIRECTOR'S CHAIR with John Carpenter and Robert Rodriguez, this is one for the ages.
The stars of Comedy Central's late night stand-up smash THE MELTDOWN WITH JONAH AND KUMAIL bring their film-loving humor to Beyond Fest for "A Night at the Movies with THE MELTDOWN WITH JONAH AND KUMAIL featuring THE MONSTER SQUAD." Before screening THE MONSTER SQUAD, Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani will grab the mics to share their deep and slightly twisted love of movies before being joined by THE MONSTER SQUAD director, Fred Dekker, where they will discuss the size of The Wolfman's nards amongst many other topics.
Seminal soundtrack label and Beyond Fest partner, Death Waltz Recording Company returns with a double bill event that was a year in the making. Opening the night is a screening and live re-score of TEXAS CHAINSAW MASSACRE by musicians Umberto and Antoni Maiovvi, who have composed an 88 minute piece that plays alongside the film's existing audio tracks. A limited double album will be made available exclusively at the screening. Not content with just one release, Death Waltz is also dropping the long-awaited score to Ti West's breakout shocker, HOUSE OF THE DEVIL, complete with screening and cast and crew Q&A.

Fantastic Fest 2014 Announces First Wave of Films
These next two posts deal with the first two waves of announcements for Fantastic Fest 2014 that takes place on September 18-25th in Austin, Texas at the newly reopened Alamo South Lamar and Highball. The festival will open with the US premiere of Kevin Smith's new film "Tusk". After "Tusk", they will have the world premiere of "The ABC's of Death 2".
For more information's on what films were announced as part of the first wave, you can scroll down to the bottom of the press release.
Press Release:
Celebrating its 10th anniversary, Fantastic Fest is excited to announce the first wave of events, special guests and film programming. Fantastic Fest 2014 takes place September 18-25th in Austin, Texas at the newly reopened Alamo South Lamar and Highball.
Fantastic Fest is thrilled to open the fest
with the US Premiere of Kevin Smith's dark horror-comedy TUSK. Smith
will be in attendance for a red carpet gala screening and Q&A.
Immediately following TUSK, the world premiere of ABCs OF DEATH 2 will unveil 26 devilishly diabolical tales at Fantastic Fest
with multiple directors from the horror anthology sequel in attendance,
including: Alejandro Brugués, Robert Boocheck, Lancelot Imasuen, E.L.
Katz, Jerome Sable, Jen and Sylvia Soska, Jim Hosking, Larry Fessenden,
Chris Nash, Steven Kostanski, and Julian Barrett. Following the
premiere, guests are invited to attend 'A Bodacious Celebration: 26 Ways to Party' culminating in an epic food fight curated by Thu Tran of Food Party fame.
"My personal challenge each year is making Fantastic Fest
the best week of the year for like-minded genre film obsessive's," says
festival founder Tim League. "With the resonance of a round number
anniversary, all reasonable fetters are discarded. In 2014, we are
taking no prisoners. This festival is going to set new boundaries of
decadence, destruction and debauchery."
For its 10th anniversary, Fantastic Fest
is also going all out with celebratory events and special programming,
including two tent pole showstoppers. Legendary film critic and
historian Leonard Maltin joins proceedings as head of the comedy jury
and to play "MALTIN'S," a game tournament of movie trivia twenty years
in the making. "My brother and I were obsessed with Leonard Maltin's
Movie Guide at an early age," said MALTIN'S creator and festival alum
Ant Timpson. "His reviews shaped our own language and view of film. How
could we be even closer to our God? How could we become Leonard Maltin?
MALTIN'S was the answer." Complete rules and information on how to
enter can be found at fantasticfest.com.
Elevating the comedic quota of Fantastic Fest
programming is the addition of Comedy Central's breakout stand-up show
"The Meltdown with Jonah & Kumail." Hitting Austin for its
first-ever Fantastic Fest
performance, host comedians Jonah Ray and Kumail Nanjiani explained why
they want to be a part of the festivities, "We want to watch films,
drink, and make people laugh."
Fantastic Fest
also marks an important milestone for the Alamo Drafthouse theater
chain with the grand reopening of its flagship destination at South
Lamar and the all-new Highball. Under construction for the past two
years, the new theaters boast three new screens (9 total), and
completely rebuilt Highball bar, and 7 custom-designed karaoke rooms
that are sure to melt the mind.
See below for the initial lineup of programming at this year's festival.

In
2013 the craziest anthology ever created was released to an
unsuspecting public. It immediately divided audiences. Some claimed it
was a much-needed adrenaline shot to the heart of genre film, while
others claimed it was reprehensible and the death knell of cinema as we
know it.
In 2014 it's happening again. This time with an all-new line-up of international directors.
