Plot Synopsis:

From the imagination of Oscar-winning director Guillermo del Toro (Pan's Labyrinth, The Shape of Water) comes Crimson Peak, a lavish, stunningly realised journey into the dark heart of Gothic romance... Beginning in Buffalo, New York, during the 1880s, Crimson Peak stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, Stoker) as Edith Cushing, an aspiring writer who is haunted by the death of her mother. Edith's falls in love with seductive stranger Thomas Sharpe (Tom Hiddleston, Avengers Assemble), who whisks her off to Allerdale Hall, his baronial, yet dilapidated English mansion built upon a mountain of blood-red clay. Here Edith meets Lucille (Jessica Chastain, Zero Dark Thirty), Thomas's sister who at times seems hostile and jealous. As Edith struggles to feel at home in the imposing residence, she gradually uncovers a horrendous family secret and encounters supernatural forces that will help her discover the terrible truth behind Crimson Peak. Boasting incredibly intricate and ornate production design and a rich visual style, del Toro's film is a grandiose, boldly baroque triumph of Gothic decadence, which expertly combines and contrasts the sublimely beautiful with the shockingly grotesque. Crimson Peak is presented here in sumptuous special packaging, with a wealth of extra features, affording unprecedented insight in to the making of this modern Gothic classic.

His grip on reality soon begins to slip and he takes to stalking the streets with his power tool in search of prey...

"What Have You Done to Solange?" Review by Anthony T

Lately, I’ve been diving into Italian horror and Gallo films in my spare time as of latly. Seeing films like Dario Argento’s “Suspiria” and “Tenebre” to “Demons” to some of Lucio Fluci’s classic films “The New York Ripper” and “The Beyond”, it’s been giving me the bug to check out some more Italian horror that isn’t related to Argento and Fulci. This leads me to the Italian gallo “What Have You Done to Solange?”

The film is about a maniac killer who is killing girls at St. Mary’s. When a schoolgirl witnesses a murder, she has a hazy recollection of the accounts. Her account does nothing to help the police investigation as they thing the main suspect her teacher (Fabio Testi) who she is having an affair with that student. What could be the reason for the killing and what does Solange have anything to do with the investigation. The film also stars Cristina Galbo (Living Dead at the Manchester Mourge) and Camille Keaton (I Spit on Your Grave).

Even though this isn’t on the level of some of Argento of Fulci’s films, I still liked “What Have You Done to Solange?” One of the reasons that I liked this film was the fact that it had great direction from Massimo Dallamano. What makes it work was his ability to keep things moving. Whether it’s the way that he handles the subplots to how he makes some of the death scenes have a horrific feel to them, it helped make the scenes move at a good pace. Dallamano also does a very good job making sure the acting fit the film’s dark and creepy tone. The performances in this film was very good especially from the film’s leads Fabio Testi and Karin Baal. Dallamano does a great job making sure that both of these actors have good chemistry with each other. It helps with the whole subplot with their characters marriage and how they try to find the killer.

The screenplay written by Dallamano and Bruno Di Geronimo was very good. What makes this screenplay good was the fact it’s able to keep its dark and creepy tone throughout. Whether it’s how the story was created to how some of the action was written, this screenplay had a tone that gives you an uneasy feeling when watching this film. This makes some of the horrifying scenes work so far. The other thing that makes this screenplay good was how the main character develops during the course of the film. In the beginning I really didn’t like the character as he came off as a sleazeball, but as the film along I became interested as he’s trying to solve these murders. It’s credit to the decisions that the screenwriters made during the course of the film.

With its great direction and good screenplay, "What Have You Done to Solange?" is entertaining and horrifying gallo film that will keep you on edge.

"Crimes of Passions hits retail on July 12th

Press Release:

She is watched. She is worshipped. And she must remain a mystery.

In the early eighties British enfant terrible Ken Russell travelled to America and placed his unorthodox imprint on a pair of US movies. The first was the Altered States, so out-there its screenwriter disowned it. The second was the equally crazy Crimes of Passion, starring Kathleen Turner (Body Heat, Serial Mom) at the height of her powers.

Fashion designer Joanna Crane (Turner) leads a double life. By night she is China Blue, a prostitute who's attracted the unwanted attention of two men. One is a sexually frustrated private detective hired by her employees. The other is psychopathic priest (played by Norman Bates himself, Anthony Perkins) in possession of a murderous sex toy.

With its outré screenplay by Barry Sandler and over the top score by Rick Wakeman, Crimes of Passion may just be the most outrageous Ken Russell film ever made - and that's quite some feat!

Posing as a fashion designer, he'll be aided by a posse of beautiful - but deadly - women.

Whilst the opportunity to see Oliver Reed chewing up the scenery behind an elaborate moustache merits the price of admission alone, Hired to Kill is also noteworthy as being co-directed by Nico Mastorakis - the man behind such cult favourites as Island of Death and The Zero Boys.

Unperturbed by the disastrous outcome of his previous meddling with the dead, Dr. West (again played by Jeffrey Combs) continues his research into the phenomenon of re-animation; only this time, he plans to create life - starting with the heart of his young protégé Dan's dearly deceased, Meg Halsey. "Society" Blu-Ray Review - Written by Anthony T

“Society” is one of those films that I’ve heard about but hadn’t been able to find a copy of the film at a reasonable price. That changed, when Arrow Video picked up the film for distribution and gave this a blu-ray release.

The film is about a teenager (Billy Warlock) who feels like the odd one out in his rich and wealthy family. His feelings take a dark turn when he hears a tape that implicated his family in some bizarre ritualistic gathering with friends. The people who might know what’s going on start disappearing mysteriously. He begins to wonder if this is his mind playing tricks on him or is there something sinister going with his parents.

Going into this film, I wanted to see Brian Yuzna’s directorial debut “Society” because of the fact that I liked Yuzna’s two “Re-Animator” sequels and “Return of the Living Dead 3” a lot. Thankfully, I decided to check our “Society”, as this was completely different in tone and originality from other horror films that I’ve seen. This along with “Return of the Living Dead 3” have been Brian Yuzna’s best films that he’s directed.

One of the reason that this film is very good was Yuzna’s direction. He does a very good job making sure everything looked creepy. From the way that he directs his cast to how the scenes are approached, everything gave me that weird vibe that you’re waiting for something to happen while being interested with the story. It keeps my interest during the course of the film as there isn’t much action until the last third of the film alone. Trust me, it’s worth the wait as Screaming Mad George gruesome effects are worth seeing this film, as it’s both horrifying and something that you can’t take your eyes off. The other thing that I liked was the acting. Yuzna does a very good job making sure he gets the performances to fit this film’s bizarre tone. He makes sure that there is chemistry between his cast because it made the dialogue scene work as I became engaged in the film while I waiting for something horrific to happen.

The screenplay written by Rick Fry and Woody Keith does a very good job with creating a horror film that feels different from other horror films that were written in the late eighty/early nineties. One of the things that I liked about this was the fact that it felt original. From the creation of the story to making sure everything builds, it makes the characters interesting and left me wondering how this is going to end. The other thing that I liked about this was the fact that it does a really good job holding off all the action until the final third of the film. By going that route, it makes whatever happens in the end more interesting. This film does a very good job with that, as the payoff is one of the most surreal and shocking third acts that you’ll ever see.

Arrow Video also does a great job with amount of extras on this disc. First, the film’s audio commentary track with director Brian Yuzna. This was a very good commentary track. There is a lot of information on the production of the film including some stories that happened on set. It’s worth checking out, if you’re a fan of this film.

Next there’s a couple of interviews. “Governor of Society” an interview with “Society” director Brian Yuzna. The interview goes into Yunza’s career and how “Society” was made. After that interview its “Master of the Hunt”, interviews with “Society” stars Billy Warlock, Devin DeVasqueaz, Ben Myerson and Tim Bartell. It was a good featurette that features stories from the making of the film and how it was like to work with Brian Yuzna. The interviews portions wrap up with “The Champion of the Shunt”, interviews with special effects artists Screaming Mad George, David Grasso and Nick Benson. A nice featurette that goes into detail about how the film’s effects including the film’s most notorious scene.

The disc wraps up with a Q&A session with Brian Yunza from 2014 Celluloid Screams Festival screening of “Society”, Brain Yuzna interview from the “Society” premiere, Screaming Mad George music video and the film’s official trailer.

This is one film that you should go out of your way to check out if your into gruesome body horror. With its great direction and original screenplay “Society” is one that I would join in an instant.

"An accomplished film that should keep even the most hardened of giallo fanatics guessing until the very end." - Flickering Myth

From director Massimo Dallamano, cinematographer on both A Fistful of Dollars and For a Few Dollars More, comes giallo classic What Have You Done to Solange?, the debut feature of actress Camille Keaton (I Spit on Your Grave). A sexually sadistic killer is preying on the girls of St. Mary's school. Student Elizabeth witnessed one of the murders, but her hazy recollections of a knife-wielding figure in black do nothing to further the police's investigations. Why is the killer choosing these young women? And what does it have to do with a girl named Solange? Also starring Cristina Galbo (Living Dead at the Manchester Morgue) and Fabio Testi (I Spit On Your Grave), What Have You Done with Solange? features all the hallmarks of classic gialli - the amateur detective, the black-gloved killer - as well as a lush score from Ennio Morricone.

"Mark of the Devil" Blu-Ray Review - Written by Anthony T

“Mark of the Devil” marks the first release from Arrow Video that I was able to watch. I was very curious about this label over the years after hearing how they give their British releases the Criterion treatment. This was the first released that I was interested in because of I’m into those types of films about exploitation films of British cinema and witches in general.

The film is about a witchfinder’s apprentice (Udo Kier) who comes to a small Austrian village where he falls in love with a girl. When his master (Herbert Lom) arrives in town, his faith in him is tested when his master deems the girl to be a witch. If matters isn’t worse for him, the town witchmaster general (Reggie Nalder) is a sadistic person that rushes to judgement and want to burn her at the stake. Now caught in the middle, can he find a way to help her escape a violent death before she ends up dead?

“Mark of the Devil” is surprisingly a good film given its subject matter. Director Michael Armstrong does a very good job making the material of the film interesting and shocking. Whether it was the way that the scenes were filmed to how he makes the images feel and look so horrifying, it kept me on edge. The other thing that Armstrong does well, he makes sure that the acting fits the film’s demented tone. He does a very good making sure that most of the main characters performances are villainous. It helped gave me the reaction that I wanted towards them as most of the characters in the film are sick and repulsive. Armstrong also makes sure that his cast had great chemistry with each other. The scenes between Herbery Lom and Udo Keir were great here. Both of the actors had great chemistry with each other. It helped made me more interested in this film especially towards the end.

The screenplay written by Sergio Sasstner and Perry Parker does a very good job making sure that this was horrifying. One of the things that makes this good was the way they made sure the story was very dark from the start. All the horror scene had a certain level of shock to them. Whether it was the execution scenes to the interrogations scenes, everything generated a reaction. It helped made all the horror aspects of the film work well, as those scenes left me horrified and made me turn away from the screen. The other thing that I liked about the screenplay was the way it develops its main characters. I liked the how the writers do a good job focusing on Lom and Keir’s characters and the beliefs that each of those characters have during the course of the film. Even though they weren’t good, at least one of the characters changes during the course of the film. It makes for some very good exchanges and tension between Keir and Lom’s characters.

The special features start out with the audio commentary track with director Michael Armstrong moderated by Calum Waddell. This was a very good track. I liked how both Armstrong and Waddell cover a lot of things from the production of the film to some of the film’s subject matter to the film’s release and other films of this nature. It made for a very good and interesting track.

The next feature is “Hallmark of the Devil”: an interview with Fangoria editor Michael Gingold. The feature talks about the original release of the film and the gimmicks and retitles that Hallmark Films used on other exploitation releases that made those films successful. It was an interesting interview on the history of those films and how it became successful. It’s worth checking out if you’re into those exploitation films of that era.

After that, is “Mark of the Devil: Then and Now”. This featurette showcases the locations used in the film and how it looks now. Not a bad featurette as it was nice to revisit the film’s locations from the time the film was filmed to now.

The next featurette on the disc is “Mark of the Time”. This featurette was about the new wave of British horror in the sixties and seventies. It’s an interesting documentary on the British films that were released during that period of British horror cinema. The interviews were interesting enough to keep my interest.

After that the disc wraps with interviews from most of the cast, outtakes, trailer and a photo gallery.

“Mark of the Devil” is one of those films that does a great job frightening you with its shock value. It also worth watching for the direction of Michael Armstrong and performances of Hebert Lom and Udo Keir.

Review Rating: Four Stars.

Cult Horror Film "The Mutilator" Slashes its Way to DVD/Blu-Ray Combo Pack

Arrow Video recently released information that they will be handling the upcoming DVD/Blu-Ray release of the late eighties slasher film "The Mutilator". The film stars Matt Mitler, Ruth Martinez and Bill Hitchcock.

Special features on the DVD/Blu-Ray combo pack includes Brand new 2K restoration from original vault materials of the R-rated and Unrated versions of the film, High Definition Blu-ray (1080p) and Standard Definition DVD presentations, Original mono audio (uncompressed PCM on the Blu-ray), Optional English subtitles for the deaf and hard of hearing, Brand new interviews with cast and crew, Reversible sleeve featuring original artwork to be revealed, Fully-illustrated collector's booklet featuring new writing on the film alongside archive articles from Fangoria magazine and more to be announced.

Plot Synopsis:

Although the slasher film was in decline by the mid-1980s, there were still some grisly delights to be had... and they don't come much grislier than writer-director Buddy Cooper's sickening stalk-and-slash classic The Mutilator! When Ed receives a message from his father asking him to go and lock up the family's beach condo for the winter, it seems like the perfect excuse for an alcohol-fuelled few days away with his friends. After all, his dad has forgiven him for accidentally blowing mom away with a shotgun several years ago... hasn't he? But no sooner are the teens on the island than they find themselves stalked by a figure with an axe (and a hook, and an onboard motor) to grind... Originally entitled Fall Break (watch out for the incongruous theme song of the same name!), The Mutilator has earned a reputation amongst horror fans as one of the 'holy grails' of 80s splatter mayhem due to its highly inventive (and not to say, decidedly gruesome) kill sequences, courtesy of FX wizard Mark Shostrom (Videodrome, Evil Dead II). Finally making its long-awaited bow in High-Definition, The Mutilator has returned to terrorise a whole new generation of horror fans!

YOU BELIEVE IN REVENGE BUT I DON'T... IT NEVER ENDS

Inspired by the international success of the Dollars trilogy, and dedicated to director Sergio Leone, Cemetery Without Crosses offers a Gallic spin on the Spaghetti Western formula thanks to its star and creator, Robert Hossein (best-known to English-speaking audiences for his role in Jules Dassin's Rififi).

After her husband is lynched by bandits, Michèle Mercier (Mario Bava's Black Sabbath) seeks revenge and turns to an old friend, played by Hossein, for help. A solitary figure who lives in a ghost town and dons a single black glove before each gunfight, Hossein is initially reluctant but soon infiltrates the widow's enemies to force a showdown.

Cemetery Without Crosses is a darker breed of Western, bleak and melancholy in tone amid the explosive set pieces. It also boasts an outstanding score by composer Andre Hossein (father of Robert) and the catchiest of themes, sung by cult figure Scott Walker.

Plot Synopsis:

Nearly a decade before he donned Freddy Kruger's famous red and green sweater, horror icon Robert Englund delivered a supremely sleazy performance in Eaten Alive - another essay in taut Southern terror from Tobe Hooper, director of The Texas Chain Saw Massacre.

Deep in the Louisiana bayou sits the ramshackle Starlight Hotel, destination of choice for those who like to check in but not check out! Presided over by the bumbling, mumbling Judd (and his pet croc which he keeps in a large pond out front), the patron of this particular establishment may seem like a good-natured ol' Southern gent - but he has a mean temper on him, and a mighty large scythe to boot...

Oozing atmosphere from its every pore (the entire film was shot on a sound-stage at the famous Raleigh Studios, which lends it a queasy, claustrophobic feel) Eaten Alive matches The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for sheer insanity - and even draughts in Chain Saw star Marilyn Burns as the terrorised woman-in-peril, alongside William Finley and Mel Ferrer.
