Arrow Video Unleashes Special Edition of Guillermo Del Toro's "Crimson Peak"

Arrow Video recently released information that Guillermo del Toro's "Crimson Peak" will be receiving a special edition release. The 2015 film stars Mia Wasikowska (Alice in Wonderland, Stoker), Tom Hiddleston, (Avengers Assemble) and Jessica Chastain, (Zero Dark Thirty).

'HIGH-RISE': Four Stars (Out of Five)

A British thriller flick, from director Ben Wheatley (who also helmed the popular 2011 British thriller film 'KILL LIST'). The movie was scripted by Amy Jump (Wheatley's wife, and usual writing partner), and it was based on the 1975 novel, of the same name, by J.G. Ballard. The story is about a high-rise tower, that's cutoff from the rest of society, which falls into anarchic chaos, when social conflicts continue to escalate between the residents. The film stars Tom Hiddleston, Jeremy Irons, Sienna Miller, Luke Evans and Elisabeth Moss. I found it to be bizarre and oddly fascinating.

Hiddleston plays Dr. Robert Laing; a physiologist that takes a job at a new London tower block, which he also moves into. The high-rise is divided into different social classes; with the rich living in higher floors, and poorer residents living in lower ones. The building has everything occupants need (like a supermarket, gym and swimming pool), so residents hardly ever have to leave. Social conflicts arise when the tower's power begins to fail, and the poor suffer the blunt of it. Disagreements become violent, as the high-rise turns to total chaos and anarchy.

The movie is definitely strange, and sometimes hard to follow (for me at least), but I liked it even more because of this. Hiddleston is great in the lead, and Wheatley's direction is very fitting to the material. The story is a great examination of the power struggles between 'the haves and the have-nots'. It's also an interesting look at mental illness, as almost everyone in the movie seems to go completely crazy (very quickly). It's very amusing, quirky, and darkly humorous too. I'd definitely say it's a well made little indie thriller.

'CRIMSON PEAK': Four Stars (Out of Five)

Director Guillermo del Toro's new epic Gothic romance/ghost story; starring Mia Wasikowska, Jessica Chastain, Tom Hiddleston and Charlie Hunnam (who also starred in del Toro's last film, 'PACIFIC RIM'). It tells the story of a young author, on the run from a tragic family past, who marries a stranger. She then moves in with him, and his sister, in a house that appears to be haunted. The film was written by del Toro and Matthew Robbins (who also co-wrote the popular 90s horror flick 'MIMIC', with del Toro). It's been praised by critics and moviegoers alike; including beloved horror author Stephen King, and his son Joe Hill (who called the movie "del Toro's blood-soaked 'AGE OF INNOCENCE'"!). I enjoyed the film quite a bit, and especially found it to be visually stunning!

The story takes place at the end of the 19th century; in Cumbria, England. Edith Cushing (Wasikowska) is a young author, with a dark family past. She meets Sir Thomas Sharpe (Hiddleston), and immediately falls for him. The two are married, and Edith moves in with him and his sister, Lady Lucille Sharpe (Chastain). There's something not right about the Sharpe siblings though, and there's definitely something not right about their home; which appears to be inhabited by ghosts.

The movie has some awesome atmosphere, and extremely cool looking ghosts; the CGI is so well done though, that it does make the film feel a little less creepy (than it probably could have been). The story isn't that interesting and it's also really slow-paced; until the end. The climax makes the whole movie worthwhile though, in my opinion; so if you have the patience to wait for it, it's definitely worth it. Chastain gives an awesome domineering femme fatale performance and Hiddleston is good too. Wasikowska isn't one of my favorite actresses; but she does make a good, innocent and naive type, heroine. Del Toro is definitely the reason to see the movie though; it's not one of his best, but he also definitely doesn't disappoint. It kind of feels like a Tim Burton movie, to me; just with a slightly different visual style, and mood.

Sony Pictures Classics recently released the official trailer for Jim Jarmusch's upcoming film "Only Lovers Left Alive". The upcoming film stars Tilda Swinton, Tom Hiddleston, Mia Wasikowska and John Hurt. "Only Lovers Left Alive" hits theaters in limited release on 4/11.

Plot Synopsis:

Set against the romantic desolation of Detroit and Tangier, an underground musician, deeply depressed by the direction of human activities, reunites with his resilient and enigmatic lover.
