"The Legend of Tarzan" Review by Tim Hellman
'THE LEGEND OF TARZAN': Four Stars (Out of Five)
The newest film adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' legendary character 'Tarzan'; who first appeared in the novel 'Tarzan of the Apes', in 1912 (it was followed by 25 sequels). This movie tells the story of Tarzan's return to the African jungle (where he was raised by apes), after adapting to a civilized life in London. He's called back to investigate the corrupt activities of a Belgian King there, and then he's lured into a trap by a tribal chief. The film stars Alexander Skarsgard, in the title role, and it costars Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, Christoph Waltz and Djimon Hounsou. It was directed by David Yates (who also helmed the last four 'HARRY POTTER' movies) and it was written by Adam Cozad and Criag Brewer (who also wrote and directed 'BLACK SNAKE MOAN', starring Jackson). The movie is packed with beautiful visuals, and some pretty decent action scenes; it's definitely a lot better than the critics would like you to believe.
John Clayton III, also known as Tarzan (Skarsgard), was raised by apes in the African Congo jungle; after his parents were murdered by other (more vicious) primates. As an adult, Tarzan meets a woman, named Jane Porter (Robbie), and the two marry and move to London together. Tarzan becomes totally adapted to the civilized world, but he's later asked to return to his home; by a Belgian king. Initially Tarzan rejects the idea, but an American, named George Washington Williams (Jackson), persuades him to accept the offer. Williams believes the king is enslaving the people there, and he wants proof of it.
The movie had a budget of $180 million; and you can see just about all of it, up on screen (the visuals are breathtaking). Skarsgard is a pretty flawless Tarzan (especially his amazing physique), and I really enjoyed the movie's darker (more adult) tone; compared to most of the 'Tarzan' movies I grew up with. The film is a little slow-paced, at times, but it's mostly a lot of fun. It's also a great film for animal lovers, much like'THE JUNGLE BOOK' (from a couple months ago). If you really love animals, it's hard not to appreciate a film like this.

"Spectre" Review - Written by Tim Hellman
'SPECTRE': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)
The 24th James Bond movie; and the 4th installment starring Daniel Craig. This one has Bond battling an evil organization, known as SPECTRE, as well as corrupt political forces. It was directed by Sam Mendes (who also helmed the last Bond flick, 'SKYFALL') and it was written by John Logan, Neal Purvis, Robert Wade and Jez Butterwort. The movie costars Christoph Waltz, Léa Seydoux, Ben Whishaw, Naomie Harris, Ralph Fiennes, Dave Bautista, Andrew Scott and Monica Bellucci. It's not quite as good as 'SKYFALL' or 'CASINO ROYALE', but it is one of the better Bond films (throughout the franchise's history).
James Bond (Craig) is on a special mission, given to him by the deceased M (Judi Dench), before she died, to track down a ruthless organization known as SPECTRE. He's relieved from duty, by his new superior, the new M (Fiennes), but travels to Rome anyway; in pursuit of the terrorist organization. Bond finds aid from former allies, Q (Whishaw) and Moneypenny (Harris), while also falling for the daughter of a previous enemy, named Dr. Madeline Swann (Seydoux). Bond also finds lethal opposition, from the head of SPECTRE, Franz Oberhauser (Waltz), and his deadly henchman, Mr. Hinx (Bautista). At the same time there's a political struggle, between the new M and the new head of the Joint Intelligence Service, called C (Scott); who wants to eliminate the '00' program.
The movie cost between $245 and $300 million to make, and it's reportedly one of the most expensive films ever made; you can see nearly every dollar of it up on screen though! The action scenes are breathless and geniuslly done. I really like Bautista as Mr. Hinx; I think he's probably the best Bond goon since Richard Kiel, as Jaws. At times the film even feels a lot like 'THE SPY WHO LOVED ME'. The romance, of the film, is completely unbelievable though (even for a Bond movie) and Seydoux was severely miscast as a Bond girl (her and Craig have absolutely no chemisty together). I wish Bellucci (the oldest actress ever cast as a Bond girl, at 51) didn't have such a small part. Like all James Bond movies, the film is too long, and slow-paced (at times), but it's still well worth seeing!

Meanwhile back in London, Max Denbigh (Andrew Scott), the new head of the Centre for National Security, questions Bond’s actions and challenges the relevance of MI6, led by M (Ralph Fiennes). "The Zero Theorem" Review - Written by Anthony T
When I first heard about “The Zero Theorem” around the time
when it played at last year’s Fantasia International Film Festival, I was very
interested in the film. The fact that it had Christoph Waltz starring and the
concept of this film made me interested in seeing this.
The film follows a computer genius (Waltz) who is plagued
with loneliness and despair. With no friends and living in a rundown church, he
works on a special project that he is assigned to by management. His task is to find if there is a meaning to
life. Soon, he becomes distracted with a
hot woman (Melanie Theirry) whom he may be falling in love with and a teenager
that impedes his work. This forces him to make a choice between his new
personal life or finding out the meaning of life. Matt Damon, David Thewelis
and Tilda Swinton also costars.
Going into “The Zero Theorem”, I didn’t know what to expect
with Terry Gilliam’s latest. Was it going to be a film that I was going to
enjoy like “Brazil” and “Monty Python and the Holy Grail” or would it be
something bad like “Twelve Monkeys” or “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”? “The
Zero Theorem” would rank in between those films as this was a good film but not
great.
One of the things that makes this makes this good was the
fact that Gilliam does a great job capturing everything onscreen. Whether it’s
the way the futuristic world looks onscreen to some of the more complex scenes,
everything did a good job grabbing up my attention that made me interested in
this film. The other thing that makes Gilliam’s direction good was the way that
acting was directed. I liked how the
acting was very good. This film has a very complex screenplay but Gilliam does
a very good making sure the characters are interesting through their
performances enough to keep my interest.
The film has a very good performance for Christoph Waltz. I
liked how, he’s able to make the character fit the film’s tone in the way that
he approaches his character. It made me interested in the film even when got
dull a couple of times. The film also
has a good supporting cast including Lucas Hedges, Melanie Thierry, David
Thewells and Matt Damon in a small role.
The screenplay written by Pat Rushin was okay as there were
a couple of good things. First, I liked the way that Rushin focuses on his main
character through the film. He does a good job making sure that the screenplay
doesn’t go off track with various characters in various subplots. Instead, I
liked how Rusin makes sure that he uses the secondary characters as part of
making sure the main character is the main focus in the film. If this went to
into various subplots with different characters, it would’ve been confusing to
watch. Thankfully, it didn’t go that way. The other thing that I liked about
this screenplay was the fact that it keeps its tone throughout. This film has a
dark tone that helps make the film feels different and is able to keep my
attention. If this didn’t have that type of tone, then the film’s story
would’ve felt flat and boring. Thankfully, it wasn’t the case here.
The only problem that I had with the screenplay was the fact
that it goes all over the place with the way the story was executed. Maybe it
was the fact that it felt too weird at a couple of points with its imagery. I don’t
know if its part of the interior/exterior notes in the screenplay or this was a
director’s call, but it doesn’t hurt the film that much to completely hate it.
Overall, this was an improvement from the last Terry
Gilliam’s “Twelve Monkeys” and “Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas”. With its very
good performance from Christoph Waltz and solid direction from Terry Gilliam,
“The Zero Theorem” is an entertaining Sci-Fi drama.

"Horrible Bosses 2" Review - Written by Tim Hellman
'HORRIBLE BOSSES 2': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)
Sequel to the 2011 hit comedy flick 'HORRIBLE BOSSES', which was about three friends who team together to try to murder their bosses. This time the buddies plot to kidnap the adult son of a rich businessman, who conned them out of their own business dreams. All of the main cast, of the original film, is back for this installment (except Colin Farrell, who's character died in the first movie); including Jason Bateman, Jason Sudeikis, Charlie Day, Jennifer Aniston, Jamie Foxx, Kevin Spacey and Lindsay Sloane. They're joined this time around by Chris Pine and Christoph Waltz. It was directed by Sean Anders and written by Anders and John Morris (along with John Francis Daley and Jonathan Goldstein). Anders and Morris are the same team that wrote other popular comedy flicks like 'SEX DRIVE' (which Anders also directed) and 'SHE'S OUT OF MY LEAGUE'; they also co-wrote 'HOT TUB TIME MACHINE', 'WE'RE THE MILLERS' and 'DUMB AND DUMBER TO' (I'm a big fan of theirs). I wasn't a fan of the original 'HORRIBLE BOSSES' but I absolutely love this sequel!
Nick Hendricks (Bateman), Dale Arbus (Day), and Kurt Buckman (Sudeikis) have decided to start their own business together; instead of having to continue to answer to the horrible bosses of other companies. They've come up with a unique shower head invention, they call 'Shower Buddy', and think they've attracted the interest of a rich investor and his son, named Bert (Waltz) and Rex Hanson (Pine). Bert promises the trio that he'll buy 100,000 units from them but after they take out a $500,000 loan, and make the product, he backs out of the deal; he then plans to buy all their shower heads, at a discounted foreclosure price, to sell himself. In order to get their money back Nick, Dale and Kurt decide they're going to kidnap Rex and ask Bert for the $500.000, they lost, in ransom. Things, of course, don't go as they planned.
I liked the idea of the original movie but just didn't find it to be that funny; I thought a lot of the jokes fell flat (despite an awesome cast) and didn't think it seemed very inspired (especially considering the great premise and great cast). This installment gets everything right that the first film got wrong. First of all it's hilarious, from beginning to end, thanks in large part to the directing of Anders and the clever writing team of Anders and Morris. The jokes rarely miss this time around and it's got a pretty clever caper storyline, and an awesome car chase climax, to boot! The film's success is also thanks largely to the outstanding cast, that seems like they're having a lot more fun this time; you can see it in the bloopers (in the end credits) and you can also just feel it in the movie (the whole way through). This is comedy done right; much better than the original!

Official Stills from Tim Burton's Upcoming Film "Big Eyes"
The Weinstein Company recently released stills for Tim Burton's upcoming film "Big Eyes". The film stars Amy Adams, Christoph Waltz, Danny Huston, Krysten Ritter, Jason Schwartzman, Terence Stamp and Jon Polito.
"Big Eyes" hits theaters on Christmas Day.
Plot Synopsis:
From the whimsical mind of director Tim Burton, BIG EYES tells the outrageous true story of one of the most epic art frauds in history. In the late 1950s and early 1960s, painter Walter Keane had reached success beyond belief, revolutionizing the commercialization of popular art with his enigmatic paintings of waifs with big eyes. The bizarre and shocking truth would eventually be discovered though: Walter’s works were actually not created by him at all, but by his wife Margaret. The Keanes, it seemed, had been living a colossal lie that had fooled the entire world. A tale too incredible to be fiction, BIG EYES centers on Margaret’s awakening as an artist, the phenomenal success of her paintings, and her tumultuous relationship with her husband, who was catapulted to international fame while taking credit for her work.
