"Incredibles 2" Review by Tim Hellman
'INCREDIBLES 2': Four Stars (Out of Five)
Pixar and Disney's long anticipated sequel to their 2004 animated superhero blockbuster 'THE INCREDIBLES'. The plot follows the Parr family once again, as they battle a new enemy, who wants to turn the public against all 'supers', while they also try to deal with normal family life as well. The film was once again written and directed by Brad Bird, and it features returning voice cast members including Craig T. Nelson, Holly Hunter, Sarah Vowell and Samuel L. Jackson. Huck Milner, Catherine Keener, Bob Odenkirk, Sophia Bush and Bill Wise also join the cast this time. The movie has received nearly unanimous positive reviews from critics (like it's predecessor), and it's also expected to be a huge hit at the Box Office once again as well. I enjoyed it, but definitely not as much as the original.
The Parr family is still acting as the superhero team known as 'The Incredibles' when the authorities become too concerned about the damage being done during their battles with supervillains, and the team is ordered to halt their actions. Then they're contacted by a superhero fan named Winston Deavor(Odenkirk), and invited to his house for a proposition, along with their friend Frozone (Jackson). There Winston and his sister Evelyn (Keener) offer Helen Parr (Hunter) a superhero job fighting crime, in order to win back the support of the public. Helen accepts the job offer, and Bob Parr stays home to watch the kids while she works. Helen has to battle a new supervillain in the process, and Hank finds parenting even harder than crime fighting, especially when he learns their baby Jack-Jack has even greater superhero powers than they all do.
The movie is really well made once again, and always beautiful to watch. The action scenes are mostly exciting too, and the humor is clever and witty (all once again). It's also great how progressive these films are, especially this time having the wife superhero be the one fighting crime, while the husband stays home to watch the kids. Of course he also finds parenting to be even harder than crime fighting too. That's all great about this movie, but it still didn't live up to my very high expectations of matching the original (or even coming close to it). It doesn't capture the same magic, and after the original film was so refreshing and somewhat groundbreaking at the time of it's release, there wasn't much this sequel could do to live up to it of course. It's still really well made though, and entertaining enough.

"The Hitman's Bodyguard" Review by Tim Hellman
'THE HITMAN'S BODYGUARD': Four Stars (Out of Five)
The new action-comedy starring Ryan Reynolds and Samuel L. Jackson, as a hitman (Jackson), who's supposed to testify at the International Court of Justice, and his bodyguard (Reynolds). The film costars Elodie Yung, Salma Hayek, Gary Oldman, Joaquim de Almeida and Richard E. Grant. It was directed by Patrick Hughes (who also helmed 'THE EXPENDABLES 3') and it was written by Tom O'Connor (the script was featured on the 2011 Black List). It's received mixed (to negative) reviews from critics, but it is a hit at the Box Office so far. I found it to be a pretty amusing action buddy flick.
A sadistic Eastern European dictator, Vladislav Dukhovich (Oldman), is on trial for atrocious crimes against his people, but there's not enough legal evidence to convict him. Notorious hitman Darius Kincaid (Jackson) makes a deal to testify against Dukhovich, in order to free his incarcerated wife (Hayek). Expert bodyguard Michael Bryce (Reynolds), who's fallen on hard times recently, is tasked with transporting Kincaid from the United Kingdom to the International Court of Justice. The only problem is that the two are mortal enemies, and they also have an army of bloodthirsty assassins (working for Dukhovich) trying to kill them the whole time. They of course bond on their adventurous road trip.
The movie is actually a surprisingly cool action flick; which shouldn't be that surprising (I guess), considering it was directed by the guy who did 'THE EXPENDABLES 3' (and I'm a fan of that film as well). The movie also has great chemistry between it's two leading men, and it's quite funny at times as well; Hayek and Yung are also both great in their roles too (and sexy). The movie does get a little long at times, but for the most part it's a lot of fun. Especially if you like good actions flicks, and Reynolds and Jackson!

"Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" Review by Tim Hellman
'MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)
Tim Burton's new dark fantasy adventure, based on the 2011 young adult novel (of the same name) by Ransom Riggs. Burton directed the film, and Jane Goldman (a frequent writing collaborator of director Matthew Vaughn) wrote the screenplay. It tells the story of a boy that travels to a mysterious orphanage (on a Welsh island), after his grandfather is horrifically killed, that's filled with peculiar (but very gifted) children. The film stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris O'Dowd, Terence Stamp, Judi Dench and Allison Janney. It's received mixed reviews from critics, and it underperformed at the Box Office (due to it's $110 million budget). I enjoyed it, but it definitely doesn't live up to Tim Burton's best (in the slightest).
Jake's grandfather, Abraham (Stamp), has been telling Jacob (Butterfield) stories about a magical place, filled with kids with special powers, since he was a very young boy. He also told him about vicious monsters with tentacles, that Abraham had to fight (as a child), and a beautiful headmistress, named Miss Peregrine (Green), that watched over the gifted children. Miss Peregrine is a Ymbryne, according to Abraham (in his stories), which can change into a bird and control time. The children's powers ranged from turning invisible, to controlling air. After Abraham is mysteriously (and very violently) killed, Jake (who's now 16-years-old) travels to the mysterious place, on an island off the coast of Wales, with his father Franklin (O'Dowd). Once there, Jacob learns that the stories are all true!
The movie (like all of Tim Burton's work) is visually stunning, and quite beautiful to watch. There might be a little too much CGI, for some people's tastes, but I still enjoyed it. The film is very dark, violent (especially for a kids' movie) and weird (like all of Tim Burton's films); and that's why I liked it as well. It's also got plenty of action, and fascinating characters. While the performances are all good (especially the always amazing Eva Green), the characters are slightly underdeveloped though; and the drama is a bit forced (and lacking any true emotion). The story is also a little too complicated, and somewhat hard to follow. It's far from a perfect movie, but it is entertaining; it's definitely better than Burton's last couple films.

"The Legend of Tarzan" Review by Tim Hellman
'THE LEGEND OF TARZAN': Four Stars (Out of Five)
The newest film adaptation of Edgar Rice Burroughs' legendary character 'Tarzan'; who first appeared in the novel 'Tarzan of the Apes', in 1912 (it was followed by 25 sequels). This movie tells the story of Tarzan's return to the African jungle (where he was raised by apes), after adapting to a civilized life in London. He's called back to investigate the corrupt activities of a Belgian King there, and then he's lured into a trap by a tribal chief. The film stars Alexander Skarsgard, in the title role, and it costars Samuel L. Jackson, Margot Robbie, Christoph Waltz and Djimon Hounsou. It was directed by David Yates (who also helmed the last four 'HARRY POTTER' movies) and it was written by Adam Cozad and Criag Brewer (who also wrote and directed 'BLACK SNAKE MOAN', starring Jackson). The movie is packed with beautiful visuals, and some pretty decent action scenes; it's definitely a lot better than the critics would like you to believe.
John Clayton III, also known as Tarzan (Skarsgard), was raised by apes in the African Congo jungle; after his parents were murdered by other (more vicious) primates. As an adult, Tarzan meets a woman, named Jane Porter (Robbie), and the two marry and move to London together. Tarzan becomes totally adapted to the civilized world, but he's later asked to return to his home; by a Belgian king. Initially Tarzan rejects the idea, but an American, named George Washington Williams (Jackson), persuades him to accept the offer. Williams believes the king is enslaving the people there, and he wants proof of it.
The movie had a budget of $180 million; and you can see just about all of it, up on screen (the visuals are breathtaking). Skarsgard is a pretty flawless Tarzan (especially his amazing physique), and I really enjoyed the movie's darker (more adult) tone; compared to most of the 'Tarzan' movies I grew up with. The film is a little slow-paced, at times, but it's mostly a lot of fun. It's also a great film for animal lovers, much like'THE JUNGLE BOOK' (from a couple months ago). If you really love animals, it's hard not to appreciate a film like this.

"The Hateful Eight" Review by Tim Hellman
'THE HATEFUL EIGHT': Five Stars (Out of Five)
Writer/director Quentin Tarantino's gruesome western epic; about nine vile strangers, that hold up together in a stagecoach stopover, during a deadly blizzard (in Wyoming), sometime after the American Civil War. The movie stars Samuel L. Jackson, Kurt Russell, Jennifer Jason Leigh, Walton Goggins, Demian Bichir, Tim Roth, Bruce Dern, Michael Madsen, James Parks and Channing Tatum. The film was released in two versions; a standard 167 minute theatrical cut, and a special 70mm Roadshow version (that's 20 minutes longer). I saw the Roadshow presentation, and it was well worth it. The film is a classic; Tarantino at his best!
The story takes place in the Wyoming winter, sometime after the Civil War. It revolves around a bounty hunter, named John Ruth (Russell), and his prisoner, Daisy Domergue (Leigh). They're headed to the town of Red Rock; where Daisy will hang, for her notorious crimes. Along the way they meet up with another bounty hunter, named Major Marquis Warren (Jackson), and a man who claims to be the new sheriff of Red Rock, named Chris Mannix (Goggins). When the group becomes stuck, in the middle of a horrendous blizzard, they head to a well known haberdashery; to wait it out in. Once there, they meet four more strangers; and none of them appears to be very trustworthy.
The film is classic Tarantino; if you like his stuff, you should love it. It's filled with grotesque violence, foul language and other disgusting debauchery; but it's also a fascinating character study, with a strong message about race relations. The movie plays out in two distinct acts; the first being filled with lots of character development, excessive dialogue, and plot buildup. The second act is almost all violent, bloody, payoff (it's like two different movies almost). I love the way it was structured, and I was intrigued by nearly all of the film's despicable characters. I also really enjoyed seeing the movie in it's glorious 70mm presentation (it's well worth the extra ticket price, in my opinion). The pacing, in the first act, will test some viewer's patience (as all Tarantino films do); and so will the violence, and offensive imagery. I think it's all worth it, in my opinion, though. The film is a masterpiece; and seeing the Roadshow presentation of it, was one of the greatest filmgoing experiences I've ever had!

"Kingsman: The Secert Service" Review - Written by Jim Herling
Movies that sort of fall into that James Bond kind of niche are usually a good time. When said movie is a well-written, big budget, meta-aware semi-parody of the same, the result can be terrific... and that's exactly what Kingsman: The Secret Service is. It's based on a comic book series called simply The Secret Service, written by Mark Millar (who also wrote Wanted) and penciled by legendary comic artist Dave Gibbons (the man who drew the classic Watchmen). The movie version of Kingsman is written by Jane Goldman and Matthew Vaughn; Vaughn also directed.
The plot is fit for 007 as well: a multimillionaire tech mogul sets out to save the Earth from the adverse affects of being home to humanity by using signals sent through Wi-Fi capable devices to drive people into murderous rages so they all kill each other. The only survivors would be the rich and powerful who sign on with this genius, Valentine, the always awesome Samuel L. Jackson, who manages to be hysterical and diabolical while brandishing a hysterical lisp. Valentine is opposed by the Kingsmen, a multi-national spy agency protecting the world in secret. They're all a bunch of Bonds who are named after Arthurian knights, like the suave yet deadly Galahad (Colin Firth, a surprisingly convincing badass here) and their leader Arthur (Michael Caine, as great as ever). That is, until their Lancelot dies and the search goes out for his replacement, as each Kingsman must nominate a young student to assume the vacant position at the table; Galahad nominates Eggsy (Taron Egerton, who definitely holds his own against a very talented and accomplished cast). Eggsy is about as far from Bond as you can get, and his struggle to become a Kingsman is the emotional core of the film.
And it's a great film. Matthew Vaughn is proving to be the right man for the job when it comes to action movies like this one, with the aforementioned Wanted as well as X-Men: First Class on his resume. He's a deft hand when it comes to action scenes and just as deft at the emotional stuff. The cast is great, from the stars I've already mentioned to the supporting cast; people like Mark Strong as Merlin, the Kingsmen's tech and support guy, and Sophie Cookson as another Lancelot candidate, Roxy. And the cast needs to be talented because the script Vaughn and Goldman crafted is smart, witty, and fast. Everything comes together here to make Kingsman: The Secret Service a great movie. I give it 4 out of 5 stars.
