Angelina Jolie Pitt's to Direct "First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers for Netflix

Netfilx recently announced that  Angelina Jolie Pitt will direct an adaptation of First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers for the VOD service. The film is based on the book from Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung.

The film is slated to be available on Netflix in late 2016.

Press Release:

Angelina Jolie Pitt will direct an adaptation of First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, a harrowing and poignant memoir from Cambodian author and human rights activist Loung Ung about surviving the deadly Khmer Rouge regime.

Jolie Pitt will direct and produce the Netflix Original Film from a script she co-adapted with Ung. Acclaimed Cambodian director and producer Rithy Panh, director of the Oscar-nominated Best Foreign Language film The Missing Picture, will also be a producer.

The film will be made available to members of the world's leading Internet TV network in late 2016 and will be submitted to major international festivals.

Loung Ung was five years old when the Khmer Rouge assumed power over Cambodia in 1975 and began a four-year reign of terror and genocide in which nearly two million Cambodians died. Forced from her family's home in Phnom Penh, Ung was trained as a child soldier in a work camp for orphans while her six siblings were sent to labor camps. Ung survived and wrote First They Killed My Father: A Daughter of Cambodia Remembers, which was first published in 2000. Jolie Pitt read the book and contacted Ung over a decade ago and they became close friends. Together they adapted the book into a screenplay.

"I was deeply affected by Loung's book," commented Jolie Pitt. "It deepened forever my understanding of how children experience war and are affected by the emotional memory of it. And it helped me draw closer still to the people of Cambodia, my son's homeland." She added, "It is a dream come true to be able to adapt this book for the screen, and I'm honored to work alongside Loung and filmmaker Rithy Panh." Jolie Pitt's Cambodian-born son, Maddox, will also be involved in the production of the film.

Netflix's global reach was a major factor in Jolie Pitt's desire to partner with the streaming service. "Films like this are hard to watch but important to see," said Jolie Pitt. "They are also hard to get made. Netflix is making this possible, and I am looking forward to working with them and excited that the film will reach so many people." The film will be released in both Khmer and English.

"We are proud to be working with Angelina Jolie in bringing this emotionally powerful and ultimately uplifting story exclusively to Netflix members around the world," said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. "Loung Ung's incredible journey is a testament to the human spirit and its ability to transcend even the toughest circumstances."

"Angelina and I met in 2001 in Cambodia, and immediately, I trusted Angelina's heart," commented author Loung Ung. "Through the years, we have become close friends, and my admiration for Angelina as a woman, a mother, a filmmaker, and a humanitarian has only grown. It is with great honor that I entrust my family's story to Angelina to adapt into a film."

Loung Ung is currently writing her first novel, and is a co-owner of Market Garden Brewery in Cleveland, Ohio. Since 1995, Loung has made over 30 trips back to Cambodia and has devoted herself to helping her native land heal from the traumas of war. Loung's other works include Lucky Child and Lulu in the Sky. She was also a contributing writer on the groundbreaking film, Girl Rising.

First They Killed My Father will begin production later this year in Cambodia and will precede Jolie Pitt's filming of Africa which focuses on paleo-anthropologist Dr. Richard Leakey's decades-long fight to save Africa from the illegal wildlife trade. Africa was postponed to provide additional time to get the script finalized and all production elements lined up properly to provide for the ambitious scope of the film. Jolie Pitt remains committed to making the film and continues her strong support of Dr. Leakey, the people of Kenya and ending wildlife crime and the illegal wildlife trade.

Jolie Pitt is currently in post-production on By The Sea, an adult drama written and directed by Jolie Pitt, starring Jolie Pitt and Brad Pitt, that will be released by Universal this year. Jolie Pitt recently directed Universal's Unbroken, based on the life of Olympian and World War II POW survivor Louis Zamperini. Jolie Pitt made her feature directorial debut with In the Land of Blood and Honey.

"Special Corespondents" is slated to be released on Netfilx in 2016.

Press Release:

Special Correspondents, a new original feature film written and directed by Ricky Gervais and starring Eric Bana (Deliver Us From Evil, Lone Survivor) and Gervais (Muppets Most Wanted, Derek), will debut worldwide on Netflix next year.

With Special Correspondents, as with The Office & Extras, Gervais has written a hilarious, modern comedy in which Bana plays a struggling New York based radio journalist, whose arrogance and decadent lifestyle has hindered his career. With his job on the line he fakes front line war reports from the comfort of his hideout above a Spanish restaurant in the heart of Manhattan.

"Special Correspondents is classic Ricky Gervais: smart social satire with heart," said Netflix Chief Content Officer Ted Sarandos. "It's the kind of great grown-up comedy that studios rarely make anymore, one that's perfect for Netflix members around the world."

Gervais said, "Having shaken up the TV industry, Netflix is about to do the same to Hollywood. It's great to be part of the changing future. Ted Sarandos is the new Godfather of entertainment and he made me an offer I couldn't refuse."

The film is a co-production between Bron Studios and Unanimous Entertainment. Ricky Gervais, Unanimous' Chris Coen, Bron's Aaron L. Gilbert, Manuel Munz and Larry Sanitsky will produce.

Creator and star of The Office, Extras, and Derek, Gervais has won three Golden Globes, two primetime Emmys and seven BAFTAS. The Office is the most successful British comedy of all time, shown in more than 90 countries with seven remakes. Considered the most influential British comedian since Charlie Chaplin, Gervais is an award winning stand-up comedian, has hosted the Golden Globes three times and has written, directed and acted in the films Cemetery Junction and The Invention of Lying.

Eric Bana is one of Australia's best known actors and began his career as a comedian in the sketch comedy series Full Frontal before winning critical acclaim in the biographical crime film Chopper. Since then, Bana has starred in such films as Munich, Black Hawk Down, Hulk, The Time Traveler's Wife, Hanna, and Star Trek. He has received Australia's highest film and TV awards for his performances and will next be seen in director Jim Sheridan's The Secret Scripture, Guy Ritchie's Knights of the Round Table: King Arthur and The Finest Hours.

Netflix Acquires Subscription Streaming Rights to "The Search for Michael Rockefeller"

Agamemnon Films recently released information that Netflix acquired subscription VOD right for their award winning documentary "The Search for Michael Rockefeller". The film won Best Documentary at the 2011 New York Independent Film Festival.

"The Search for Michael Rockefeller" hits Netflix on February 1st.

For more information on this film, you can visit the film's official website at: http://www.searchformichael.com

Press Release:

AGAMEMNON FILMS, founded by Fraser C. Heston and his father Charlton, is pleased to announce that NETFLIX has acquired subscription VOD rights to their award-winning documentary, THE SEARCH FOR MICHAEL ROCKEFELLER about the disappearance and ultimate fate of the Rockefeller scion in New Guinea, written, directed and produced by Fraser C. Heston. Airdate on Netflix is set for February 1, 2015.

The deal was brokered by Mark Kashden of CINEDIGM, the leading independent content distributor in the U.S. The film is repped for all other rights by Paul Hudson of OUTSIDER PICTURES, an international sales and distribution company.

Says director Fraser Heston: "The disappearance of Michael Rockefeller is one of the enduring unsolved mysteries of the 20th Century. Until now. There has been a resurgence of interest in Michael Rockefeller and the timing is perfect."

In 1961, Rockefeller's trading canoe capsized off New Guinea. Rockefeller set out to swim for shore, with the fateful words: 'I think I can make it…' He was never seen again. Or was he? In 2007, Heston discovered a lost cache of unedited, unseen 16mm footage shot by Milt Machlin, (author of the 1973 classic The Search for Michael Rockefeller) during his 1969 expedition to the New Guinea in search of Michael.

"This footage is extraordinary," says Heston. "It's a time capsule of the last days of stone-age New Guinea."

The documentary includes interviews with missionaries who argue forcefully that Michael was killed and eaten by cannibals. However, Heston was shocked to discover a shot of a naked white man paddling in a canoe full of Asmat warriors, who looks disturbingly like Michael – taken 8 years after Michael disappeared.

THE SEARCH FOR MICHAEL ROCKEFELLER (79 minutes) was written, produced and directed by Fraser C. Heston. Alex Butler, Exec-producer; Heather J. McAdams, Co-producer; Ted Hughes, Editor and Co-producer. Original score by Jon Alexi. Premiering on Netflix February 1, 2015.

Helmer Fraser Heston is also developing a feature film at Agamemnon, based on Machlin's remarkable adventure and Michael's untold story, entitled GHOSTS OF NEW GUINEA. Heston, who wrote the screenplay with scribe Heather J. McAdams, is partnering on the production with Aussie producer Robin James, of Ploughed Field Productions, based in Brisbane, Australia, and will begin scouting locations in North Queensland in January.

Streaming Giant Netflix Acquires SXSW Special Jury Award Winner "Print the Legend"

Netflix (Nasdaq: NFLX), the world's leading Internet TV network, has acquired the rights to 3D printing film "Print The Legend," the 2014 SXSW Film Festival recipient of the Special Jury Recognition Award for Editing & Storytelling in the Documentary Feature Competition. The Netflix original documentary goes behind-the-scenes of the top American 3D printing brands as they fight for dominance in the rapidly developing, groundbreaking field of 3D printing. The film will premiere exclusively on Netflix in 2014 and will be available to stream in all territories where Netflix is available.

3D printing is changing the world – from printing human organs to guns, to dismantling the world's industrial infrastructure by enabling home manufacturing. It's "the next Industrial Revolution." "Print the Legend" follows the people racing to bring 3D printing to your desktop and into your life. For the winners, there are fortunes – and history – to be made. "Print the Legend" is both a 3D Printing Documentary, capturing a tech in the midst of its "Macintosh Moment," and, even more so, a compelling tale about what it takes to live the American Dream.

"It's so rare for a film to capture history in the making, and Luis Lopez and Clay Tweel have done just that in their skillful presentation of the elation and betrayals experienced by young entrepreneurs detailing the groundbreaking technology of 3D printing," said Lisa Nishimura, Netflix VP of Original Documentary and Comedy. "This is a compelling glimpse into a game changing technology as it nears an inflection point going from the fantasy world of a few obsessed visionaries to a must-have technology that may enter every home."

"From the day we knew the 3D printing world would be our focus, we set our sights on a SXSW premiere," said Luis Lopez, Clay Tweel, and producer Steven Klein. "To premiere in front of the most tech savvy and entrepreneurial festival crowd in the world and partner with the Netflix documentary team - who work brilliantly at the cutting edge of distribution - is truly a dream come true."

The film delves into the people behind the machines and asks tough questions about the industry's creative drive to enable consumers to produce anything from trinkets to handguns, including being there with provocateur Cody Wilson as he uploads his printable-gun files to the internet, setting off a worldwide media firestorm. The film roots its core story in the rise and challenges of start-ups MakerBot and Formlabs as they vie to release consumer models and control the narrative of their market to compete with established industrial players Stratasys and 3D Systems.

"Print the Legend" was directed, shot, and edited by Luis Lopez & Clay Tweel ("Make Believe" and "The King of Kong") and produced by Steven Klein ("Make Believe"). The project was developed, produced, and financed by Chad Troutwine ("Freakonomics") and Audax Films, led by Co-Producer Andrew Kortschak ("Gore Vidal: The United States of Amnesia") and Executive Producer Walter Kortschak. The film was also produced by Dan O'Meara ("By The People: The Election of Barack Obama"). Exhibit A Films, including producer Seth Gordon ("Undefeated," "Mitt," "The King of Kong") and Executive Producer Mary Rohlich ("Make Believe"), led the filmmaking team throughout and brought on longtime collaborators Clay, Luis, and Steven.
