"I Feel Pretty" Review by Tim Hellman
'I FEEL PRETTY': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)
The new comedy starring Amy Schumer as a severely insecure woman who suffers a head injury, while working out, and then suddenly thinks she's the most beautiful woman ever. The film also costars Michelle Williams, Rory Scovel, Tom Hopper, Aidy Bryant, Busy Philipps, Emily Ratajkowski, Lauren Hutton and Naomi Campbell. It was directed and co-written by Abby Kohn and Marc Silverstein (in their directorial debut); the duo has previously co-written such romcom hits as 'NEVER BEEN KISSED', 'HE'S JUST NOT THAT INTO YOU', 'VALENTINE'S DAY', 'THE VOW' and 'HOW TO BE SINGLE'. The film has received controversial criticism (from internet users) that it's guilty of body shaming (women that are larger than Schumer), and it's gotten mostly negative reviews from critics. It did surprisingly well at test screenings though (with actual moviegoers), and it's also performed well at the Box Office so far too. I really enjoyed it, and I also think it has a really inspiring and positive message.
Renee Barrett (Schumer) is really unhappy with her life; largely because she thinks that most people are 'looks prejudice' against her. She makes a wish to be undeniably beautiful one night, and then the next day she falls while working out, and suffers a severe head injury from it. When she comes to she actually thinks her wish came true, and she now sees herself as one of the most beautiful women in the world. Her enormous confidence then ends up attracting others, and it greatly helps Renee finally succeed at life (finally) as well.
I've been harassed and alienated because of my looks all of my life, and I know that most people are looks prejudice against me. So I could really relate to this film. It's a little cheesy in places, and some of it is definitely unrealistic, but it's still a really charming, uplifting and inspiring movie, with an awesome message. What happens to Renee (in the end) is of course not believable either, but it doesn't matter, the message still really works. I wouldn't say it's a hilarious film (if comedy is what you're looking for), but it is really funny as well. Most of all it's just a really heartfelt, inspiring and empowering movie!

"A Bad Moms Christmas" Review by Tim Hellman
'A BAD MOMS CHRISTMAS': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)
The sequel to the 2016 comedy hit 'BAD MOMS' is a Christmas family comedy flick. It reunites Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn, in their overworked mother roles. This time they have to deal with their own overwhelming mothers, who are visiting for the holidays, while also trying to put on the perfect family Christmas. It costars Susan Sarandon, Christine Baranski and Cheryl Hines, as the three older moms, while Jay Hernandez also reprises his role from the first movie. It was once again written and directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore, and it's gotten mostly negative reviews from critics (unlike the first film). It is another hit at the Box Office though. I enjoyed it slightly more than the original.
Amy (Kunis), Kiki (Bell) and Carla (Hahn) are still overworked, and stressed out, especially because it's nearing Christmas time. They become even more over-burdened when all of their mothers show up for the holidays; Ruth (Baranski), Sandy (Hines) and Isis (Sarandon). Each of their moms is overwhelming, in different ways, which causes excessive chaos once again for the three young mothers. More bonding, of course, also occurs as a result of their new problems.
The film is a pretty routine Christmas comedy flick. The humor is definitely hit and miss (for me at least) as well, but it is more consistently funny than the original (in my opinion). I think largely due to the addition of the three older mother characters, and all of the three veteran actresses give good performances in their roles too (Baranski is especially domineering in her domineering mother role). I also think Bell, Kunis and Hahn are more settled into their roles this time around as well. So overall I'd say this sequel definitely surpasses the original, at least by a little.

"Valerian and the City of a Thousand Planets" Review by Tim Hellman
'VALERIAN AND THE CITY OF A THOUSAND PLANETS': Four Stars (Out of Five)
A big-budget science-fiction French action movie, from writer/director Luc Besson. It's based on the French sci-fi comic book series 'Valerian and Laureline' (which debuted in 1967), from writer Pierre Christin and illustrator Jean-Claude Mezieres. The film tells the story of two special space agents, Valerian and Laureline, who must stop an unknown invading force from wiping out the planet Alpha (a home for species from a thousand different worlds). The movie stars Dane DeHaan, Cara Delevingne, Clive Owen, Herbie Hancock, Kris Wu, Rihanna, Ethan Hawke and Rutger Hauer. It was made on a budget of $180 million, which was all funded by Besson himself (through his own funds, and crowd-sourcing), making it the biggest budgeted indie film of all time (as well as the highest budgeted French film). It needs to make $350 million (worldwide) in order to make a profit (Besson says), and justify a sequel, and it's gotten mostly positive (to slightly above average) reviews from critics so far. I found the story, and lead characters, to be a little bit dull, but the amazing alien world created by Besson, and the visuals, are absolutely stunning!
The story takes place primarily on the planet Alpha, where species from a thousand different planets live together in peace. Special agents Valerian (DeHaan) and Laureline (Delevingne) are tasked with protecting Alpha, by taking down law offenders that threaten to harm the peace. At the same time Valerian professes his love for Laureline, and he desperately tries to get her to reciprocate the feeling. When an unknown alien force threatens not only Alpha, but the entire universe, Valerian and Laureline are forced into their greatest adventure together yet.
The vast fantastical world Besson has created (on screen in this movie) is as impressive as some of the best science fiction films ever made (including Besson's own 'THE FIFTH ELEMENT', if you consider that one of the best). The special effects are also at least some of this year's best. I was really into the film too, for the first half of it's running length, and then I slowly started to lose interest, until it became a bit of a bore at the end. I still have to give it a positive recommendation though, for what Besson does accomplish with the film (especially for an indie movie), and I know I would have adored it as a kid. I'm not familiar with the comic book though, so I don't have any idea what fans of it will think, but I'd still recommend seeing it on the big screen (in 3D, like I did) just for the fun of the visuals.

"The Space Between Us" Review by Tim Hellman
'THE SPACE BETWEEN US': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)
A sci-fi teen romance, about a boy that's born on Mars who wants to visit Earth, but it might kill him. The film stars Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson, Gary Oldman and Carla Gugino. It was directed by Peter Chelsom, who's also helmed a lot of other sentimental tearjerkers like this, and it was written by Allan Loeb, with Richard Barton Lewis and Stewart Schill. The movie has received mostly harshly negative reviews from critics, and it's also bombed at the Box Office so far. I loved it!
The story is set in the near future, when an astronaut who's sent to Mars, named Sarah Elliot (Janet Montgomery), discovers she's pregnant. Sarah decides to have the baby there, but she dies during childbirth. Knowing that it might kill the child, who's named Gardner, to try to bring him home to Earth, the remaining astronauts raise him there on Mars. At 16, Gardner (Butterfield) decides that he really wants to visit his home planet, but the man in charge of the space mission, Nathaniel Shepherd (Oldman), is afraid that he won't survive the visit. Gardner becomes obsessed with the idea though, and he also really wants to meet his father. A teenage girl, that he meets online, named Tulsa (Robertson), helps him.
The movie is very sentimental; but I love sentimental movies, when they're done right (like this one is). It's well written, and acted (you can never go wrong with Gary Oldman). It's also a very sweet, and quite touching, love story; and it's about outcasts finding their way in life. I think it's an extremely beautiful (and very well made) movie, and I don't understand the critical hate against it (once again). Audiences, that have seen it, all rave about it (it has an average viewer rating of A-). The film kind of reminds me of 'COLLATERAL BEAUTY' (which was also written by Loeb), from the end of last year. I loved that movie as well, and the critics hated it. Fuck the critics!

"The Bye Bye Man" Review by Tim Hellman
'THE BYE BYE MAN': Three Stars (Out of Five)
A horror flick about a supernatural entity that can possess anyone that learns it's name, which terrorizes three college students. It was directed by Stacy Title, and written by Jonathan Penner (of TV's 'SURVIVOR' fame). The script is based on a chapter of the 2005 book 'The President's Vampire', titled 'The Bridge to Body Island' (by Robert Damon Schneck). The film stars Douglas Smith, Cressida Bonas, Lucien Laviscount, Jenna Kanell, Michael Trucco, Carrie-Ann Moss, Leigh Whannell, Erica Tremblay, Cleo King, Faye Dunaway and Doug Jones (as The Bye Bye Man). It's received mostly negative reviews from critics, and fans alike, but it's done really well at the Box Office (so far). I thought it was OK.
Three college students (Smith, Bonas and Laviscount) move into an old house, near campus. Once there, they learn about a supernatural entity called The Bye Bye Man (Jones). They also discover that the Bye Bye Man can possess anyone who says or thinks it's name (and make them do horrible things). In order to try and stop the creature, they investigate it's origins. While doing so, they desperately try to stop others from learning about it. They also frantically try not to kill each other, in the process either.
The movie is a great concept for a horror flick, and The Bye Bye Man is definitely a frighteningly memorable slasher film villain. I'd like to see a sequel, or maybe more, and hopefully the potential franchise keeps getting better. Penner's script isn't bad though (he also plays a small part in the film), and Title's direction is decent as well. I also can't believe the producers got such an awesome cast for this (Whannell, Moss, Dunaway, Jones!). I'd still recommend seeing it, if you're a fan of horror movies.

"Bad Moms" Review by Tim Hellman
'BAD MOMS': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)
Hit comedy flick; about three overworked moms, that bond and decide to liberate themselves from the stress of parenting together. The movie stars Mila Kunis, Kristen Bell and Kathryn Hahn (as the three lead moms); and it costars Christina Applegate, Jada Pinkett Smith, Annie Mumolo, Jay Hernandez, David Walton and Clark Duke. It was written and directed by Jon Lucas and Scott Moore; the duo previously performed both duties on the teen sex comedy flick '21 & OVER' (and they also co-wrote a little movie called 'THE HANGOVER'). The film has done well at the Box Office (so far), and it's also gotten decent reviews from movie critics. I enjoyed it, but it does have it's flaws.
Amy Mitchell (Kunis) works, nonstop, to provide for her family. She catches her slacker husband (Walton) cheating on her, one night on the internet, and kicks him out. After that her life becomes a complete mess; until she meets two other mothers (Bell and Hahn) with similar problems. The three become best friends, and they all learn to relax (and party) together. This causes a lot of concern from other (more uptight) mothers, especially the power hungry Gwendolyn (Applegate), and a battle begins.
The movie is funny, and I really like the concept behind it. It's also nice to see more raunchy comedy flicks, starring all women (that also deal with real women problems); but it would also be nice to see these films written and directed by more women, as well though. The cast is all decent, but I think Hahn's part is a little too over-the-top; and I also think Smith's talents are wasted (in a throwaway role). Kunis is OK, but someone like Tina Fey could have really made her part work. With that said, Bell and Applegate are perfectly cast (and they're also both hilarious in it). Some of the material is a little weak, as well, but other parts are brilliant. It's definitely a hit-and-miss comedy flick.
