"The Space Between Us" Review by Tim Hellman

'THE SPACE BETWEEN US': Four and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

A sci-fi teen romance, about a boy that's born on Mars who wants to visit Earth, but it might kill him. The film stars Asa Butterfield, Britt Robertson, Gary Oldman and Carla Gugino. It was directed by Peter Chelsom, who's also helmed a lot of other sentimental tearjerkers like this, and it was written by Allan Loeb, with Richard Barton Lewis and Stewart Schill. The movie has received mostly harshly negative reviews from critics, and it's also bombed at the Box Office so far. I loved it!

The story is set in the near future, when an astronaut who's sent to Mars, named Sarah Elliot (Janet Montgomery), discovers she's pregnant. Sarah decides to have the baby there, but she dies during childbirth. Knowing that it might kill the child, who's named Gardner, to try to bring him home to Earth, the remaining astronauts raise him there on Mars. At 16, Gardner (Butterfield) decides that he really wants to visit his home planet, but the man in charge of the space mission, Nathaniel Shepherd (Oldman), is afraid that he won't survive the visit. Gardner becomes obsessed with the idea though, and he also really wants to meet his father. A teenage girl, that he meets online, named Tulsa (Robertson), helps him.

The movie is very sentimental; but I love sentimental movies, when they're done right (like this one is). It's well written, and acted (you can never go wrong with Gary Oldman). It's also a very sweet, and quite touching, love story; and it's about outcasts finding their way in life. I think it's an extremely beautiful (and very well made) movie, and I don't understand the critical hate against it (once again). Audiences, that have seen it, all rave about it (it has an average viewer rating of A-). The film kind of reminds me of 'COLLATERAL BEAUTY' (which was also written by Loeb), from the end of last year. I loved that movie as well, and the critics hated it. Fuck the critics!

"Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children" Review by Tim Hellman

'MISS PEREGRINE'S HOME FOR PECULIAR CHILDREN': Three and a Half Stars (Out of Five)

Tim Burton's new dark fantasy adventure, based on the 2011 young adult novel (of the same name) by Ransom Riggs. Burton directed the film, and Jane Goldman (a frequent writing collaborator of director Matthew Vaughn) wrote the screenplay. It tells the story of a boy that travels to a mysterious orphanage (on a Welsh island), after his grandfather is horrifically killed, that's filled with peculiar (but very gifted) children. The film stars Eva Green, Asa Butterfield, Ella Purnell, Samuel L. Jackson, Chris O'Dowd, Terence Stamp, Judi Dench and Allison Janney. It's received mixed reviews from critics, and it underperformed at the Box Office (due to it's $110 million budget). I enjoyed it, but it definitely doesn't live up to Tim Burton's best (in the slightest).

Jake's grandfather, Abraham (Stamp), has been telling Jacob (Butterfield) stories about a magical place, filled with kids with special powers, since he was a very young boy. He also told him about vicious monsters with tentacles, that Abraham had to fight (as a child), and a beautiful headmistress, named Miss Peregrine (Green), that watched over the gifted children. Miss Peregrine is a Ymbryne, according to Abraham (in his stories), which can change into a bird and control time. The children's powers ranged from turning invisible, to controlling air. After Abraham is mysteriously (and very violently) killed, Jake (who's now 16-years-old) travels to the mysterious place, on an island off the coast of Wales, with his father Franklin (O'Dowd). Once there, Jacob learns that the stories are all true!

The movie (like all of Tim Burton's work) is visually stunning, and quite beautiful to watch. There might be a little too much CGI, for some people's tastes, but I still enjoyed it. The film is very dark, violent (especially for a kids' movie) and weird (like all of Tim Burton's films); and that's why I liked it as well. It's also got plenty of action, and fascinating characters. While the performances are all good (especially the always amazing Eva Green), the characters are slightly underdeveloped though; and the drama is a bit forced (and lacking any true emotion). The story is also a little too complicated, and somewhat hard to follow. It's far from a perfect movie, but it is entertaining; it's definitely better than Burton's last couple films.

STX Entertainment Announces Title for Upcoming Sci-Fi Love Story

STX Entertainment recently released the title for their upcoming sci-fi love story "The Space Between Us". The film stars  Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight, Harry Potter), Asa Butterfield (Ender's Game, Hugo), Carla Gugino ("Wayward Pines," Night at the Museum), Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland, The Longest Ride), BD Wong (Jurassic World, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"), and Janet Montgomery (Black Swan, "Salem").

Motion picture and television studio STX Entertainment has officially titled their previously untitled intergalactic love story as "The Space Between Us," it was announced today by Oren Aviv, President of STX Entertainment's Motion Picture Group.

Set to start production this month, the film stars Gary Oldman (The Dark Knight, Harry Potter), Asa Butterfield (Ender's Game, Hugo), Carla Gugino ("Wayward Pines," Night at the Museum), Britt Robertson (Tomorrowland, The Longest Ride), BD Wong (Jurassic World, "Law & Order: Special Victims Unit"), and Janet Montgomery (Black Swan, "Salem").

In this star-crossed science fiction love story about two teens from different worlds, Gardner Elliot, the first human born on Mars, is secretly raised in an experimental colony after his astronaut mother dies during childbirth. Sixteen years later, Gardner begins an online romance with a girl living in Colorado and hatches a plan to travel across the universe to meet her. Now, on the run, with Earth's gravity threatening his very existence, Gardner must race against time and nature to find his love and win her heart. Official Stills for the Upcoming Teen Drama "Ten Thousand Saints"

Archer Grey Productions and Maven Pictures released released stills for their film "Ten Thousand Saints, which made its world premiere at this year's Sundance Film Festival. The film is latest from "American Splendor'" directors Robert Pulcini and Shari Springer Berman. "Ten Thousans Saints" stars Ethan Hawke, Asa Butterfield. Emily Mortimer, Julianne Nicholson, Hailee Steinfeld and Emile Hirsch.

"Ten Thousand Saints" will be making its final screening at the Sundance Film Festival on 1/31 at 10Pm at the Holiday Village Cinema 4 in Park City, UT.
